Description

(No Model.) S
R SONTHBIMER.
CLASP FOR PURSES, &c. No. 302,788. Patented July 29, 1884.
mum {K A WITNESSES V UNITED STATES Parent tries.
CLASP FCR PU RsEs; 86C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 302,788, dated July 29, 1884:.
Application filed April 24, 1884.
(all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Brennan SONTHEIMER, of Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag and Purse Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved bag and purse fastener which can be con venient] y opened by pressure on one part of the fastening device; and the invention consists of a rigid locking-plate attached to one jaw of the frame, said locking-plate being provided with a grooved face having a cut-away edge at the rear part, and of a spring-plate that is attached to the second jaw of the frame and adapted to interlock with the fixed plate, and to be released therefrom when it is depressed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved bag and purse fastener. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a plan. Fig. 4 is a side view of a modified construction of the same; and Figs. 5 and 6 are details of the rigid plate and spring-plate of the fastener.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A A in the drawings represent the jaws of a bag or purse frame of the usual construction. To the jaw A is riveted or otherwise fastened a rigid locking-plate, B, which is provided at its roundedoff end with a grooved edge, b, for the spring-plate O, that has a beveled interlocking edge, (I, and rigidly attached at its (No model.)
{ opposite end to the jaw A. The grooved edge Z) of the rigid locking-plate B is cut away at the lower rear part, as shown inFigs. 5 and 6, so that the spring-plate G,when it is pressed down by the finger, clears the rigid plate B and admits the opening of the bag or purse. When closing the bag or purse frame, the beveled edge of the spring-plate O interlocks with the grooved edge of the rigid plate 13, and holds thereby the bag or frame in closed position. Either the spring-plate G alone or both the spring-plate C and the rigid plate 13 may be provided with projecting buttons or knobs d d, for the more convenient opening of the fastener, as shown, respectively, in Figs.- 2 and 4-. The knobs, however, do not form contact with each other, and serve merely for giving a more ornamental appearance to my bag or purse fastening device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of a rigid locking-plate, B, attached to one jaw of a bag and purse frame, said plate having a grooved edge, Z), and a cutaway lower rear part, b, with a spring-plate, 0, attached to the other jaw of the frame, said spring-plate having a beveled edge, (I, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I-claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD SONTHEIMER. Witnesses:
