Description

Feb. 20, 1962 D. E. BURGE SHIPPING AND DISPLAY UNIT Filed July 29, 1959 INVENTOR. DAVID BURGE ATTORNEYS U ed t m P fii M 3,021,948 SHIPPING AND DISPLAY UNIT David E. Burge, Garden City, N.Y., assignor to Lever Brothers Company, New York, N.Y., a corporation of Maine Filed July 29, 1959', Ser. No. 830,360 Claims. (Cl. 206-78) This invention, generally, relates to a shipping carton and display unit and, more particularly, to a new and improved structural arrangement for both a shipping carton and a stand, or board, to display the carton.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a new is provided with at least two channel means formed on a-surface in spaced-apart relation to receive the extending portions of acarton.-- v v Preferably, the novel display board-of the invention is provided with a plurality of pairs 'of; channel means so that'any desired number of the shipping cartons'may be supported thereon, suitable space on the board being provided for a permanent advertisement. By this arrangement, the articles are displayed without having to remove them from their shipping carton.
When a particular carton is emptied, it is only necessary to remove the empty carton and replace it with a filled carton. Thus, it is no longer required to remove the articles from their shipping carton in order to place them on display, providing a substantial saving in time to the seller and assuring to the buyer that the articles are handled a minimal number of times.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be pointed out in the following description and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which disclose, by way of example, the principle of the invention and the preferred mode of applying that principle.
In the drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a view in perspective of a preferred arrangement in accordance with the principles of the invention;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view showing the lower surface of the shipping carton; and
FIGURE 3 is a view in cross-section taken along the line 3-3 in FIGURE 1.
Referring'now to a preferred embodiment of the invention for illustrative purposes and particularly to FIG- URES 1-3 of the drawings, a display board is supported in a substantially vertical position by any suitable means (not shown). The board 10 may be formed of any suitable material such as wood, plastic, metal, etc., and may be any desired size depending upon the number of shipping cartons 11 to be mounted thereon. In addition, the board 10 may be any suitable shape, such as, rectangular, triangular, circular, or some irregular shape so long as the vertical size is suflicient to accommodate one or more cartons 11.
Space is provided on the board 10 for a suitable advertisement indicated generally by the numeral 12. A channel 13 is formed adjacent the advertisement 12 by an L-shaped bar 14, and a matching channel 15 is formed by a bar 16 which is similar to the bar 14. The bars 14 and 16 are attached to the display board 10 by any suitable means such as, for example, nails 17, as shown in FIGURE 3. Also, the bars 14 and 16, preferably are 1 positioned horizontally and in such a manner that the v for two cartons.
3,021,948 Patented -Feb.- 20, 1962 channels 13 and 14 face each other. 1
Any desired number of pairs of bars may be provided depending upon the number of cartons 11 to be placed on display. As shown in FIGURE 1,
The shipping carton .11 is formed with a front surface 21, a back surface 22 and two sides 23 and 24. A plu rality of partitions 25 are formed in the carton 11 infront-to-back positions so that a plurality of articles 26 may be arranged in parallel rows. Of course, any other open, as desired.
arrangement of the partitions 25 may be provided, the
invention not being limited to any particular arrangement for the partitions,
The front surface 21 of the-carton 11 is provided with a plurality of openings, or windows, 27 through whicha. portion of the articles 26 may be viewed. Each wimv dow 27 is arranged to be intermediate of the partitions .25, and each window 27 may either be covered with a transparent material such as glass or plastic or may be The back surface 229i each carton llis higher than the front surface 21, and a plurality of tabs 28, are' formed to extend in substantially'the-same plane as the. back surface 22. If d'esired, the tabs 28 maybe formed 1 by cutting out portions of-the bottom surface Each of the sides 23 and 24 extends from the front su'r face 21 to the back surface 22 and provides forwardly sloping edges 31 and 32, respectively.
The sloping edges 31 and 32 terminate on the back surface 22 somewhat below the upper edge 33 so that the edge 33 is free to be received in the channel 13, FIG- URE l. The tabs 28, being in substantially the same plane as the back surface 22, are received in the channel 15, also seen in FIGURE 1.
The shipping carton and display board arrangement are particularly adapted for use with such articles as toothbrushes and tooth paste tubes. However, the invention is not limited to the article or articles with which it may be used.
Each shipping carton 11 may be of formed of molded plastic, metal, cardboard, or any other suitable material. Moreover, any color or colors may be used for the display board 10 and carton 11. Any suitable cover or lid (not shown) may be provided for each carton 11, if desired, or a plurality of cartons 11 may be packed in a single container for shipping. During shipment, the tabs 28 and the upper edge 33 of each carton 11 are protected, for example, by corrugated board or other means.
In use, a carton 11 is mounted for display by sliding the edge 33 and the tabs 28 in a selected pair of channels 13 and 15, respectively. This arrangement makes it unnecessary for a seller to remove the articles 26 from a shipping carton in order to place them on display.
While there has been shown and described and pointed out the fundamental novel features of the invention as applied to a preferred embodiment, it will be understood that various omissions and substitutions and changes in the form and details of the device illustrated may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is the intention, therefore, that the invention be limited only as indicated by the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. A shipping carton and display board comprising a carton having an open top and adapted to contain and display a plurality of articles, a front surface of said carton being wider than it is high, a back surface of said carton being the same width as said front surface and having at least a portion that is higher than the height of said front surface, sides connected between said provision is made 2. A shipping carton and display board as set forth in claim-l including sloping edges formed on said sides in a forwardly, downward manner from said back-surface.
3. A shipping carton and display board asset forth in claim 1 wherein said another portion of said back surface extending therefrom is in the form of at least three tabs removed from the bottom of said carton to' lie in substantially the same plane as said back surface.
4. A shipping carton and display unit comprising a carton having an open'top and adapted to contain and display a plurality of articles, a back surface on said, carton, a first portion on said back surface extending past one dimension of said carton, a' second portion on said back surface extending past said one dimcnsion'of said carton in a direction opposite to said first portion, a display board having a substantially flat surface,'a first channel means formed on said substantially fiat surface in a substantially horizontal, downwardly facing position, and a second channel means formed on said substantially flat surface in a substantially horizontal,
upwardly facing position so that said first and second portions extendingfrom said back'surface of the carton are received, respectively, by said first and second channel means to support said carton for displaying said plurality of articles, said carton also having front, side and bottom surfaces, said front and side surfaces being arranged in a same plane with said one dimension, said bottom surface being arranged in a plane perpendicular to said one dimension.
5. A display unit comprising in combination a display surface, at least two spaced-apart channel means attached to said display surface providing opposed channels parallel to said surface, a carton having anopen top and adapted to contain and display a plurality of articles comprisingconnected bottom, front, side and rear Walls, said rear wall having portions integral therewith and cooperating with said opposed channels, said portions extending-in opposite directions in the same plane as said rear wall below said bottom wall and above the rearmost portions of said side walls, said channels thereby supporting said carton firmly against said display References Cited in the file of this patent UNITED STATES PATENTS 666,241 Streit Jan, 29, 1901 1,839,806 Schwartz Jan. 5, 1932 1,917,132 Labombarde July-5t, 1933 2,160,620 Myers May 30, 1 939 2,783,880
