, UNITED STATES rricsi PATENT IRVING V. BLISS, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THE MILWAUKEE CHAIR COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINEDHIGH CHAIR AND CARRIAGE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 301,662, dated July 8, 1884-.
Application filed January 12, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Invnvc V. BLIss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined High Chairs and Carriages; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of combined high chairs and carriages for which Letters Patent'No. 217 ,341
were issued July 3, 187 9, to Franklin Ohichester, in which wheels are attached to rollerbars affixed to the short legs of the chair.
Heretofore it hasbeen common, when converting a high chair to a roller-chair, to invert the rear legs, whereby they were adapted to serve as handlcsin the rear of the seat. By
my improvement said rear legs are maintained in a vertical position at all times, both when used as handles and as legs, and when changed from one position to the other are simply moved upward-or downward in aver- 0 tical direction through slots or guideways; and
my invention pertains to the device for adjusting and holding the rear legs and the connections for folding the front legs, said rear legs being adapted to serve the twofold purpose of legs when used as a high chair and handles when used as a roller-chair, and when so adjusted as handles being more compact and convenient than heretofore.
My invention is explained herein and by 0 reference to the accompanying drawings, which I are hereby made a part of this specification,
and in which- Figure l is a side view of the high chair. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig.
3 is a side view of the roller-chair, and Fig. 4
is a vertical section of the same. I
Like letters refer to similar parts in the several figures.
The roller-bars A A are secured to lower 5o ends of legs of roller-chair, substantially as braces E, which braces are pivoted to said front shown in said Patent No. 217,341. The front legs, 13, are attached to the front ends of said roller-bars A by hinge J. The rear ends of roller-bars are provided with slots 0, for the reception of the rear legs, D. The front and rear legs are connected by the brace-rods E, the ends of the brace-rods E being permanently attached to the rounds F and G, the ends of which rounds are free to turn in the front and rear legs as said legs are folded.
When my chair is unfolded and used as a high chair, the upper ends of the rear legs, I), engage beneath the rear edge of the seat H, and are retained by the hook I, which engages in staple L in the upper round, or some equivalent device, while the front legs, B, are
prevented from being inclined rearward by the brace-rods E.
When desirous of folding the chair, the hook I being released, the upper ends of the legs D are drawn back from beneath the edge of the seat H and upward from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to that shown in Figs. 3 and 4, whereby the front legs are folded back in a horizontal position against the under side of the roller-bars, and thus suspended by the brace-rods E, and said legs and. folding parts are retained in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4 by the said hook I, which engages in a staple, K, affixed to the lower round.
I Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a convertible high and roller chair, the combination, with the chair-frame, of the front legs, 13, rear legs, D, and bracesE, said front legs, B, beinghingedat their upper ends to the lower front part of the chair-frame, and
being niovably attached to the rear legs, 1), by
0 and rear legs, said rear legs being free to move vertically through ways provided therefor at the lower rear part of said chair-frame, substantially as set forth.
2. In that class of rollerchairs provided 5 with horizontal roller-bars, the combination, with the chair-frame and roller-bars, of the front legs, B, hinged at their upper ends to the front ends of said roller-bars, bracerods E, pivoted at their front ends to the legs B,
the front ends of said roller-bars, said rounds F and G being loosely fitted in their bearings in said front and rear legs, in which they turn as said legs are folded, substantially as and for 15 the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IRVING V. BLISS.
