(Cl. 139-165) a multiplicity of parts and others are occasioned by lack of control of the assembly parts over the check strap itself. Du-ring the weaving operation, as the shuttle is urged back and forth across the lay by the action of the picker stick, it is Well known that proper checking of the picker stick on its forward and rearward stroke is essential to permit the proper boxing of the shuttle and operation-of the parts of the loom associated therewith. Since this checking action is repeated and violent'in nature any excess flexing of the check strap will cause the rapid wearing of the check strap. This problem is increased due to the fact that when the loom is stopped, such as over the weekend, the check strap firms up due to the cooling of the strap and due to loss of humidity. Thus, excess flexing is particularly conducive to wear of the strap during its violent checking operation. The multiplicity of parts associated with the hanger cause the check strap to become easily out of adjustment and no accurate means of adjustment is normally provided.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to provide an improved check strap assembly which will eliminate excess flexing of the check strap and thus be conducive to longer wear of the check strap.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simple means of adjusting the length of the check strap and which will at the same time maintain the check strap in proper adjustment with relation to the other parts associated therewith.
Another object of this invention is to provide a check strap assembly which employs a reduced number of parts and which will at the same time provide an easy means of adjustment which has never been possible with those assemblies heretofore in operation.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a check strap assembly which will permit the fastened ends of the check strap to be aligned with the position of the picker stick at the point where checking is being carried out and to conform to the angle of the picker stick, thus further assuring that the shuttle will be checked evenly on any fabric at all times.
The construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described, together with other features thereof.
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specification and by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, wherein an example of the invention is shown and where- FIGURE 1 is a perspective view looking from the rear and at the right-hand end a loom showing a checking device constructed in accordance with the present invention operably associated therewith,
FIGURE 2 is a sectional plan view taken along the line 2-2 in FIGURE 1, and
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view, similar to FIGURE 1 with parts omitted, showing a modified form of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, a loom frame of a conventional type is broadly designated at 10. The usual lay 11 is shown associated with the frame 10 and has the usual shuttle box assembly 12 carried thereon. A picker stick .13 is shown carrying a picker 14 for propelling a shuttle (not shown) across the lay 11. The parts described above may be of any conventional type as would be found on any loom of standard manufacture. It is with the checking assembly that this invention is particularly concerned and a description of a preferred embodiment of this invention and a single modification thereof is described below and in the draw- A check strap hangerwhich is constructed according to the present invention is designated at A and longitudinal extension or projecting means which project from each side of the hanger are designated at B. It will be noted that these extensions B project outwardly from the check strap hanger A for a distance commensurate with the stroke of the picker stick during the weaving operation and therefore the respective free ends of the extensions B are in substantial alignment with the picker stick when in its ultimate forward and rearward positions. A check strap is designated at C and it will be noted that the terminal portions thereof are substantially at right angles to the picker stick so that, as will be described in greater detail below, there will be little excess flexing action and so that the various parts of the assembly A may exert an elfective control over the check strap C.
The hanger A is constructed with the usual Lshaped bracket 15 which is adapted to be secured to the lay 11 by its lower web 15a while the vertical web 15b supports the assembly by engaging the rear vertical surface of the lay 11. A pair of suitable slots 16 are provided in the lower horizontal web 15a of the bracket 15 and suitable bolts 17 serve as fastening means to secure the bracket 15 to the lay .11 as described above. A vertically disposed standard 18, preferably integral with the bracket 15, extends downwardly therefrom. Projecting from the sides adjacent the lower portion of the standard 18 are a pair of aligned protuberances or arms 19 and these protuberances project outwardly and substantial align ment with the bracket.
It will be observed that the extension means B are secured to and extend outwardly from these protuberances 19 for a distance substantially equal to or commensurate with the stroke of the picker stick 13 during a weaving operation. The extension elements or means B include a leg 20 which engages the protuberance 19 and is adapted to be suitably secured thereto. Fastening means are provided in the form of bolts 21 which are carried by the protuberances 19 and which extend through slots 22 in the legs 20 of the extension elements B. The extension elements B are further provided with transverse arms or elements 23 which extend substantially at right angles to the free end of the legs 20 but which are inclined inwardly toward the center of the assembly so that the terminal portions of the check strap C will be in conformity with the angle of the picker stick 13 in its ultimate forward and rearward positions during weaving. These arms 23 carry suitable bolts 24 for securing the check strap thereto adjacent each end of the check strap C.
FIGURE 2 illustrates the fact that the check strap C forms, together with the remaining parts of the assembly, a checking assembly of a substantially rectangular configuration. The friction guides 25, 26, and 27 respectively, are shown for engaging the check strap C and providing the requisite friction and control.
FIGURE 3 shows a modified form of the invention in which like numerals and letters are used to designate like parts but with prime notations added. The protuberances 19 of the first described embodiment of the invention are provided in the modified form in the nature of a cylindrical extension member or arm 19' and it will be noted that threaded elements B correspond to the extension means B. These threaded elements B project into the arm 19 and are provided with suitable lock nuts 21' which serve to provide an adjustment for the threaded portions B. An abutment or transverse element 23' is provided at each of the free ends of the threaded elements B and are provided for the purpose of securing the check strap C thereto as by the bolts 24'. It is thus seen that this invention provides a hanger comprising a bracket, projecting means carried by said racket extending in substantial alignment with the picker stick in its ultimate forward and rearward positions, and means attaching said check strap adjacent respective ends of said projecting means. It will be noted that devices embodying the present invention are to be used as checking devices on both ends of the loom and that the various parts may be modified so as not to interfere with the other working parts of any conventional loom. While a preferred embodiment of the invention has been described using specific terms, such description is for illustrative purposes only, and it is to be understood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the following claim.
What is claimed is:
A shuttle checking assembly carried by the lay of a loom having a picker stick, and including, a bracket having fixed connection with the lay, at (least one longitudinally projecting extension fixedly carried by said bracket below the lay and aligned therewith, a transverse element having fixed connection with said extension adjacent the end thereof projecting rearwardly transversely with respect to said extension and being disposed in substantial transverse alignment with the picker stick when in its ultimate. rearward position immediately after receiving a shuttle, means providing for the longitudinal adjustment of said transversely rearward ly projecting element, a check strap, and means attaching one end of said check strap to said transversely rearwardly projecting element, so that the strap extends laterally along said transversely rearwardly projecting element and in alignment with said picker stick when in its ultimate rearward position.
