Description

Patented Aug. 17, 1926.
UNITED. STATES PATENT QFFICE.
ELBRIDGE R. HOLMES, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOE TO CROMPTON KNOWLES LOOM WORKS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
Application filed February This invention relates -.to shuttle guards for looms and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a guard which will be held rigidly to the loom in such a way that should it become loose due to vibration or wearing it can be tightened without removing the holder therefor from the loom.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shuttle guard holder constructed of resilient material of such form that the resiliency serves to hold the member and its holding means against relative movement.
\Vith these and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings wherein I have shown a convenient embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a lay having my invention applied to the hand rail thereof,
Fig. 2 is a vertical enlarged section through the hand rail showing the manner of securing the guard holder to the hand rail, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the holder.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that I have provided a lay 10 having a shuttle race 11 and a reed 12 secured thereto. The upper part of the reed is positioned by a hand rail 13 which is secured in any approved manner to the loom swords not shown. In the normal operation of the loom the l y moves back and forth and the shuttle moves thereacross passing over the race plate 11 and under the hand rail 13. These parts may be of any approved construction and form no part of my invention.
In carrying out my invention I provide a guard having a wire or rod provided with hooked ends 21 which are held in place means of bolts 22. The hand rail may be beveled on the ends thereof as indicated in Fig. 1 and may have a front wall 23 substantially arallel to the flight of the shuttle. The hand rail has secured thereto one or more rod holders or supports 24 each of said holders being formed of a piece of sheet metal and having two depending arms 25 and 26 which have oppositenotches as at 27 positioned to receive the wire or rod 20. The arms have upwardly and back- SHUTTLE Guam).
13,1325. Serial No. 9,019.
wardly inclined offsets 28 which terminate in a U-shaped bend 29 having vertical sides and through which extends a bolt 30. The bolt has a head 31 which lies against the rear wall of the hand rail 13 and has a threaded portion 32 extending through the ad acent upper portion of the holder 24:, a washer 33 and nut 34: being provided to secure the holder in place.
The bend 29 extends sufficiently above the bolt to render the holder sufliciently resilient to hold the washer 33 against the nut 34 so as to prevent loosening of the latter and as shown in Fig. lthe holder is wide enough to prevent angular movement of the holder about the bolt 30, the bolt passing through the central part of the bent end 29 so that the notches 27 will extend on each side thereof?" For this reason it has been found that a single bolt is suflicient to secure the holder in place. Should the constant vibratron of the lay loosen the rod itcan. be tightened by compressing the arms 25 and 26 by means of nut 34.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a very simple holder for a loom shuttle guard constructed of sheet metal to render the same resilient having parallel sides which serve not only to hold the shuttle guard against relative movement with respect to the hand rail but also act as a check to prevent loosening of nut 34:. Also, because of the notches 27 a single bolt is found suflicient for each holder.
Having thus described my invention it will be apparent that changes and modifications may be made therein by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, butwhat I claim is:
1. In a shuttle guard for. looms, a rod having the ends thereof secured to the loom, a holder for the intermediate portion of the rod, said holder being formed of a single piece of resilient material bent back upon itself to provide spacedarms having notched ends to receive the rod, and securing means passing through the holder intermediate the bent and notched ends thereof.
2. In a shuttle guard for the hand rail of a loom, a rod, aholder for the rod, said holder being formed of a single piece of materlal bent back upon itself to form a U shaped end and having also depending notched spaced arms to receive the rod,-and
securing means passing between the notched and U-shaped ends of the holder to secure said holder to the hand rail.
3. A holder for a loom shuttle guard comprising a single piece of material bent back upon itself to form a U-shaped upperend,
and having depending notched spaced arms on the lower portion thereof 'andhaving a bolt hole therethrough intermediate the U- shaped and notched portions thereof.
. having an inverted,Usshapedwresilient.loody portion the lowerfend of whichlras clamplng contact with therodQand securing means -passing through a'resilient portion of the 2( holder and into the hand rail. Intestimon-ymvhereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
