15 Claims. (01. 139183) This invention pertains to fly shuttle looms and more particularly relates to shuttle boxes therefor.
Looms of the above mentioned type usually comprise a reciprocating lay having a shuttle box mounted on each end and picking mechanism associated with each shuttle box for picking the shuttle out of the shuttle box and across he lay to the shuttle box on the opposite side.
The shuttle box usually comprises a front side wall, a back side wall and a floor plate having a slot therein in which a picker stick oscillates. The side walls of the shuttle box hold the shuttle in proper position relative to the picker stick and usually the side walls are spaced slightly further apart at their inner end (the end nearest the reed) than at their outer end. This is so that the shuttle will be received in the shuttle box with a slight wedging action to help check the shuttle. In order that this wedging action to check the shuttle not be lost or diminished due to wear of the side walls of the shuttle box or shuttle and that the shuttle be held in proper position relative to the picker stick it is necessary that means be provided to adjust the side walls of the shuttle box at its outer end.
While various constructions have been proposed for adjusting the front wall and various constructions have been proposed for adjusting the back wall, in so far as I am aware no prior construction has been proposed for simultaneously adjusting both walls. In addition the prior constructions have proven either too complicated or too difficult to operate.
Accordingly it is a principal object of this invention to provide in a loom including a lay having a shuttle box mounted thereon and picking mechanism as aforesaid, simple and easily operated means for simultaneously-moving the outer ends of the front and back side walls of the shuttle box for adjusting the width of the outer end of the shuttle; box and for aligning the longitudinal center line of the shuttle box with the picker stick.
This and other objects of the invention are accomplished in the construction illustrated on the accompanying drawing, of which:

Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blocks and stud shown on Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a front view of one of the eccentric bushing members shown on Fig. 1.
The drawing shows but part of a loom having my invention applied thereto, the parts and mechanisms not shown being of any suitable usual construction and forming no part of the present invention.
The drawing shows a lay beam I having a shuttle box mounted thereon. The shuttle box is the left hand shuttle box and only the outer end thereof is shown. The shuttle box may be of usual construction and may comprise a lay end or floor plate 2 forming the floor of the shuttle box, a front box plate 3 forming the front side wall of the shuttle box, a back box plate 4 and a binder 5 formingthe back side wall of the shuttle box. The back box plate 4 forms the inner portion (not shown) of the back side wall while the binder 5 forms the outer portion of the back side wall. The lay end or floor plate 2 has a slot 6 therein in which a picker stick 1, carrying a picker 1', oscillates. A shuttle is shown in the shuttle box. The means by which the inner ends of the binder, back box plate and front box plate are attached to the lay may be of the usual construction and. are not shown.
The outer end of the front box plate is adjustably attached to the lay. Such attachment may comprise an eccentric bushing 8 extending into an elongated opening 9 in the outer end of the front box plate. A tubular bushing N, which may be of greater height than the eccentric bushing 8 as shown on Fig. 2, is mounted within the eccentric bushing 8. A washer H which is of greater width than the opening 9 in the front box plate, is located on top of the bushing 10. A bolt I2 extends through the washer H, tubular bushing l0 and the lay end or floor plate 2 for fixedly securing the tubular bushing iii to the floor plate, while leaving the eccentric bushing 8 free to turn about the tubular bushing In. The eccentric bushing 8 has an arm I3 extending laterally therefrom. The free end of arm 13 is bifurcated as at [4 for a purpose later to be described.
The outer end of the back box plate extends above the outer end of the binder and means are provided for fixedly securing the outer end of the back box plate to the lay, and adjustably securing the outer end of the binder to the lay. Such means may comprise an eccentric bushing I5 extending into an opening IS in the outer end of the binder 5. A tubular bushing H, which may be of greater height than the eccentric A block 22 having an axial threaded bore 23 V is pivotally mounted in the bifurcated end [4 of arm l3 by means of a pair of trunnions 24 and 25 extending into recesses 23 and 21 in the bifurcated end l4.

A yoke 34 is adjustably fastened on the lay end or floor plate 2 by means of a slot 35 and a screw 36. Yoke 34 extends transversely of the lay and has a pair of spaced apart bearings 31 and 38 in which a stud 39 is rotatably mounted. One end 43 of stud 39 is left hand threaded and is threaded into the bore 23 of block 22. The other end 4! of stud 39 is right hand threaded and is threaded into the bore 23 of block 28. Stud 39 has an enlarged hexagonal portion 12 located between the bearings 31 and 38 to facilitate turning the stud.
The operation of the device is as follows.
When the stud 33 is turned in a clockwise direction, as viewed on Fig. 1, the blocks 22 and 23 will travel inwardly on the stud 39, thereby moving the arms I3 and 20 toward each other and by means of the eccentric bushings 8 and I5 move the outer ends of the binder 5 and the front box plate 3 away from the slot 6 and each other thereby widening the outer end of the shuttle box.
When the stud 39 is turned in a counterclockwise direction, as viewed on Fig. 1, the blocks 22 v and 28 will travel outwardly on the stud 39, thereby moving the arms I3 and 23 away from each other and by means of the eccentric bushings 8 and I5 move the outer ends of the binder 5 and front box plate 3 towards the slot 6 and each other thereby decreasing the width of the outer end of the shuttle box. 1
After the shuttle box has been adjusted to the desired width, the friction between the threaded ends of the stud 39 and the blocks 22 and 28 will normally hold the shuttle box in adjusted position.
In addition to adjusting the width of the outer end of the shuttle box, the outer ends of the front and back walls may be simultaneously moved transversely of the floor plate to thereby align the longitudinal center line of the shuttle box with the picker stick. This is accomplished by loosening the screw 36 and moving the yoke 34 together with the stud 39 transversely of the floor plate, this will simultaneously move the outer ends of the front and back walls in the same direction transversely of the floor plate.
Thus I have provided means for moving the outer ends of the front and back walls of the shuttle box to adjust the width of the outer end of the shuttle box and for aligning the longitudinal center line of the shuttle box' relative to the pickerstick. T

A shuttle box for looms comprising a front box plate, a back box plate including a binder and means for simultaneously adjusting the out er ends of each of said front box plate and said binder relative to each other and relative to the longitudinal center line of the shuttle box and holding said ends in adjusted position.
5. A shuttle box for looms comprising a front box plate, a back box plate including a binder and threaded means for adjusting the width of the outer end of said shuttle box by simultaneously moving each of said front box plate and said binder toward or from each other.
6. In a loom, a shuttle box comprising a front box plate, a back box plate including a binder, and a lay end, means including an eccentric bushing adjustably connecting the outer end of said front box plate to said lay end, means including an eccentric bushing adjustably connecting the outer end of said binder to said lay end and adjustable means connecting said eccentric bushings for simultaneously moving same whereby the width of the outerend of the shuttle box is adjustable.
7. In a loom, a lay, a pickerv stick, a shuttle box mounted on said lay and having a slot therein in Whichsaid picker stick oscillates, said shuttle box comprising means forming a front wall, means forming a back .wall and means for simultaneously moving the outer ends of said walls transversely of the lay for aligning the longitudinal center line of the shuttle box relative to the picker stick and for simultaneously moving the outer ends of said walls toward or from each other for adjusting the width of the shuttle box.
8. In a loom, a lay, a picker stick, a shuttle box mounted thereon, said shuttle box comprising a floor plate having a slot therein in which said picker stick oscillates, and side walls, means including a yoke having a rotatable stud mounted thereon for adjusting the width of the outer end of said shuttle box and for aligning the longitudinal center line of said shuttle box relative to said picker stick.
9. In a loom, a lay having a shuttle box mounted thereon, said shuttle box comprising members forming a front side wall, a back side wall and a floor plate having a longitudinal slot therein, the outer end of said front wall being adjustably attached to said floor plate by means including an eccentric bushing, the outer end of said back wall being adjustably attached to said fioor plate by means including an eccentric bushing, each of said eccentric bushings having an arm extending laterally therefrom, and means for simultaneously moving said arms toward or from each other.

stud rotatably mounted on said yoke and having threaded ends, one of said threaded ends being right hand threaded into one of said blocks the other of said threaded ends being left hand threaded into the other block for moving said blocks longitudinally of said stud upon rotation thereof, thereby moving the outer ends of said front box plate and said binder transversely of said floor plate.
11. In a loom, a lay having a shuttle box mounted thereon, said shuttle box comprising a front wall, a back wall and a floor plate, and means for adjusting the outer ends of said front and back walls, said means comprising a pair of spaced apart members, each of said members having an axial bore therein, means connecting one of said members to the outer end of said front wall, means connecting the other of said members to the outer end of said back wall, a yoke adjustably mounted on said floor plate, a threaded stud rotatably mounted on said yoke and having one end threaded into the axial bore of one of said members and the other end threaded into the'axial bore of the other of said members for moving said members longitudinally of said stud upon rotation thereof thereby moving the outer ends of said front and back walls transversely of said lay.
12. In a loom, a lay, a shuttle box mounted thereon, said shuttle box comprising a floor plate and side walls, and means for adjusting the outer ends of said side walls including a yoke adjustably mounted on said floor plate for movement transversely thereof and a threaded stud rotatably mounted on said yoke, said means being so constructed and arranged that upon rotation of said stud said side walls are simultaneously moved toward or from each other and upon transverse movement of said yoke said side walls are simultaneously moved in the same direction transversely of said fioor plate.
13. In a loom, a lay including a shuttle box, said shuttle box comprising a front box plate having an opening therein adjacent its outer end, a back box plate including a binder, said binder having an opening therein adjacent its outer end, and a floor plate, an eccentric bushing mounted in each of said openings, each of said bushings having an arm extending laterally therefrom, the free end of each of said arms being bifurcated, a block pivotally mounted in each of the bifurcated ends of said arms, a stud rotatably mounted on said lay and having threaded ends, one of said threaded ends being threaded into one of said blocks and the other of said ends being threaded into the other of said blocks for moving said blocks longitudinally of said stud upon rotation thereof, thereby moving the outer ends of said front box plate and said binder transversely of said lay.
14. In a loom, a lay including a shuttle box, said shuttle box comprising a front box plate, a floor plate and a back box plate including a binder, an eccentric bushing mounted in the outer end of said binder, said bushing having an arm extending laterally therefrom, a bolt extending through the outer end of said back box plate, said bushing and said floor plate for securing said back box plate and binder to said floor plate, an eccentric bushing mounted in the outer end of said front box plate, said second named eccentric bushing having an arm extending laterally therefrom, a bolt extending through said front box plate said second named eccentric bushing and said floor plate, for securing said front box plate to said floor plate and adjustable threaded means connecting said arms for moving said arms toward or from each other thereby adjusting the width of the outer end of said shuttle box.
15. In a loom, a lay including a shuttle box, said box comprising a floor plate, a front box plate having an opening in its outer end, a back box plate and a binder, said back box plate and said binder having aligned openings in their outer ends, the outer end'of said back box plate being located above said binder, an eccentric bushing mounted in the opening in said back box plate and having a laterally extending arm, a tubular bushing mounted within said eccentric bushing, said tubular bushing being of a greater height than said eccentric bushing, a bolt extending through said opening in said back box plate, said tubular bushing and said floor plate for fixedly clamping said back box plate and said tubular bushing to said floor plate, an eccentric bushing mounted in said opening in said front box plate'and having a laterally extending arm, a tubular bushing mounted within said second named eccentric bushing, said second named tubular bushing being of a greater height than said second named eccentric bushing, a washer extending across said front box plate, a bolt extending through said washer, said second named tubular bushing and said floor plate for fixedly securing said second named tubular bushing to said floor plate and means connecting said arms for moving them toward or from each other thereby adjusting the width ofsaid shuttle box.
