LAY FOR LOOMS.

This invention relates to improvements in lays for looms and more particularly to the construction and adjustment of the lay swords on which the lay is mounted.
The form of lay sword shown in Patent No. 1,377,834 issued to Holmes employs a pipe the ends of which are threaded oppositely, the upper end having attachment with a casting secured to the lay and the lower end being received by a bearing connected to the rocker pin. The pipe as shown inthe aforesaid patent is straight with the threaded ends in alignment. Such a construction has heretofore been employed in connection with the so-called spindle pick whichrequires that the picker stick be disposed rearwardly of the shuttle. The constant vibration of the lay has a tendency to loosen the ends of the sword, permitting it to rotate because of the alignment of the ends. When the picker stick is located in a slot formed in the lay so as to be in line with the shuttle it is found to be far enough forward so that the power arm and connec" tions will interfere with the straight lay sword. To overcome this objection I have offset the sword to provide room for the picking connections, and in doing so it has been necessary to locate the sword ends out of alignment, with the result that the 0b jectionable turning of the sword is prevented. It is the general object of my present invention to improve the construction of pipe lay swords to prevent rotation thereof and permit the same to be used with a picker stick movable in a slot of the lay.
It is a further object of my invention 'toV provide means for adjusting` the lay sword without requiring the latter to be rotated, the adjustment being accomplished by connections which enable the parts to retain any given setting.
l/V ith these and other objects in View which `will appear as the description proceeds,-my invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be seen that I have provided a loom side 10 having a breast beam 11 and rocker pin V12 mounted on bearing block 13 secured to theloom side. The lay 14 is slotted as at l5 and is driven by means .of connector 16. The picker stick 17 is pivoted as at 18 to the Vpicker foot 19 and is actuated by lug strap 2O which is connected to power stick 21 theinner end of which is attached to and actuated by picker arm 22. Said arm receives a periodic inward motion to rock the picker stick about the ivot 18 and cause the upper end of said pic-rer stick to move into slot 15 to propel the shuttle S. These parts may be of the usual and well known construction. Y
In carrying out my invention I provide a foot 30 which is secured to the rocker pin 12 by means of set screws 31. That portion of .the foot 30 Vopposite the rocker pin is split as at 32, shown more particularly in Fig. 4;, and the splitparts are held together by a bolt 33 having a headd on one end and a nut'S on the other end.
The foot is provided with a bore 36 which receives a sleeve 37 slightly shorter than the bore 3G and having a head 38 on `the upper end thereof and having a longitudinal slot 39 ycut therein to render the same slightly resilient and compressible. The inner wall-of the sleeve 37 is threaded as at 440 to receive the lower threaded end 41 of a pipe d2. In a loom, a lay sword having the lower portion threaded, a rocker shaft, a bearing member fastened thereon, a sleeve member having a threaded connection with the lower portion of the sword, one of said members being received by the other member and both of said members being split, and a single clamping means to clamp both of said split members together and to clamp the sleeve against the threaded portion of theI sword.

In a loom, a lay, a sword connected at the upper end thereto and having the lower end thereof threaded, a supporting foot for the sword, and a rotatable member between the l'oot and sword and threaded on the latter to be movable vlong g'itudinally with respect to said sword, and means associated with the member to engage a part of the :toot and prevent motion of said member relatively7 to said foot.

In a loom, a lay, a sword connected at the upper end thereto, a bearing for the sword, the lower end of the sword extending through the bearing, a sleeve located in the bearing and normally held against relative longitudinal movement with respect thereto and surrounding the lower portion of the sword, and means to prevent relative longitudinal movement of the sleeve and lower end of the sword.
10. In a loom, a lay, a sword connected at the upper end thereto, a bearing for the sword, a hollow rotatable member located in the bearing and normally held against relative longitudinal movement with respect to the bearing, the lower end of the sword passing through the rotatable member, and means to aord relative adjustment of the sword with respect to the. bearing when the hollow rotatable member is rotated.

In a loom, a lay, a sword connected at the upper end thereto, a rocker shaft, a bearing for the sword mounted on the shaft, a sleeveJ` rotatably mounted in the bearing and lying on one side of the shaft, the lower end o'l the sword extending entirely through the sleeve and bearing, said sleeve being normally held against longitudinal movement in the bearing, and threaded connections bctween the sleeve and the sword whereby rotary movement of the sleeve effects relative movembent of the sword with respect to the bea/ring.
