(Cl. 2-72) This invention relates to a garment construction and particularly one of the play suit type including a waist and panties, which are worn with or Without a skirt as desired.

One object of the invention is to provide a garment construction of the general type herein disclosed in which the panties are permanently secured to the waist, and the skirt is selectively attachable and detachable relative to the waist and panty garment in a novel manner, and by the use of an economically produced construction.

More specifically it is an object of the invention to provide a garment construction in which a skirt may be attached and detached, and in either case the garment will have a finished appearance around the waistband which appearance will be substantially the same whether the skirt is attached or detached.

Another object is to provide a construction that is economical to manufacture by reason of minimizing the number of buttonholes employed by using buttons on the panties and on the skirt in such relationship to each other that the skirt buttons are used to support the skirt and appear around the waistband of the garment, whereas when the skirt is detached other buttons on the panties cooperate with the same buttonholes in the waistband to give the same finished appearance without, however, performing any supporting function for the panties but merely as a means to produce a similar finished appearance.

Still another object is to provide a garment construction which includes a skirt with buttons on it, and buttons on the panties of the garment, with the buttons of the panties or skirt being selectively coactable with buttonholes of the waistband of the garment.

A further object is to provide a combination garment in which a waist with integral panties has a waistband that forms a downwardly opening pocket around the garment, and a skirt has buttons to coact with buttonholes of the waistband, or buttons on the panties may button into the buttonholes when the skirt is not used so as to give the same finished appearance at the waistband in either case. Thus a minimum of buttonholes is provided which reduces manufacturing cost as it is more economical to sew on buttons than to form buttonholes.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my garment construction, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in detail on the accompanying drawing, wherein:

FIG. 1 is a front view of a garment construction embodying my invention and showing the skirt attached;

FIG. 2 is a rear view thereof;

FIG. 3 is a front view of the garment with the skirt detached; and

FIGS. 4 and 5 are enlarged vertical sectional views on the lines 4-4- and 55 of FIGS. 2 and 3 respectively, showing in FIG. 4 the skirt attached with buttons thereof coacting with the buttonholes of the waistband for supporting the skirt in attached position, and in FIG. 5 the skirt removed and the buttons of the panties coacting with the waistband buttonholes.

On the accompanying drawing I have used the reference numeral to indicate in general the waist and 12 the panties of my garment construction which are permanently attached thereto as shown in FIG. 4 as by the stitching indicated at 14.. A waistband 16 of double thickness is also secured in position by the stitching 14 as illustrated. In place of the convention cross section for fabric, double lines and ordinary cross sectioning have been used in FIGS. 4 and 5 to better illustrate the construction and particularly the buttonholes 18 that are formed in the waistband at 16. Preferably there are at least six buttonholes around the waistband as illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3.

The skirt of my garment construction is indicated generally at 20 and may have a top band 22 stitched thereto as at24, the top band likewise being a doubled construction and provided with a series of buttons 26 for the buttonholes 18 as will hereinafter appear. Also, the panties 12 are provided with a similar series of buttons 28, and when the skirt 20 is removed as in FIG. 5, the buttons 28 coact with the buttonholes 18 as shown, so as to give the same finished appearance as in FIG. 3 to the garment when the skirt is removed as when it is in position (FIGS. 1 and 2).

To better illustrate the construction, a portion 20* of the skirt 20 has been lifted in FIG. 1 to show the panties 12 underneath, a portion 16* of the waistband 16 has been lifted in FIG. 2 after the buttonhole 18 was unbuttoned from the skirt button 26 and the skirt below the button 26 has dropped down, exposing the panty button 28**, and in FIG. 3 a portion 16 of the waistband has been lifted after unbuttoning the buttonhole 18 from the button 28*.

From the foregoing construction it will be obvious that the buttons 26 coact with the buttonholes 18 for the purpose of supporting the skirt 20 when it is attached to the garment and the resulting appearance is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. When the skirt is removed as in FIG. 5, the buttons 28 are buttoned through the buttonholes 18 merely for the purpose of securing substantially the same appearance at the waistband as evidenced by comparing FIG. 3 with FIGS. 1 and 2. At the same time only six buttonholes are needed, whereas in other garment constructions a minimum of twelve is needed because the basic garment is provided with six buttons and both the panties and the skirt therefor require a set of butonholes.

My construction is, therefore, more economical to manufacture as it is less expensive to sew buttons in position than to form buttonholes, and when the garment is adjusted for either panty use or panty plus skirt use, the same neat appearance is had at the waistband.

Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my garment construction Without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claims any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may reasonably be included within their scope.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a garment construction, a waist having panties integral therewith, a waistband secured at its upper edge to the juncture of the Waist and panties so that a downwardly opening pocket is formed between the waistband and the panties entirely surrounding the garment to receive the entire upper edge of a skirt, a skirt having an upper edge for reception therein, said upper edge of said skirt having exterior buttons and said waistband having exterior buttonholes to receive them for supporting the skirt relative to the waist and its waistband, and said panties having corresponding buttons to coact with said buttonholes of said waistband when the skirt is removed from its supported position on said garment.

2. In a garment construction, a waist, panties secured thereto, a waistband depending from said waist and overlying the entire upper edge of said panties, and a skirt, the upper edge thereof having exterior buttons and said waistband having exterior buttonholes to receive them for supporting the skirt relative to the waist and its waistband, said panties having buttons underlying said waistband to coaet with said exterior buttonholes of said waistband to produce substantially the same waistband appearance of said garment when said skirt is removed.
