Description

(No Model.)
G. W. SANFORD. WIGK RAISBR.
Patented May 20 HE fiat WITNESSES GEORGE WV. SANFORD, OF THOMASTON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IHIRD TO PATRICK MCCAIN, OF SAME PLACE.
WlCK==RAISfER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,779, dated May 20, 1884.
Application filed January .22, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEono-E WV. SANFORD, of Thomaston, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVick-Raisers; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in wick-raisers, the object being to provide a de vice of this character which shall be adapted to raise the wick evenly by allowing each of I 5 the corners to be slightly raised independently of the other, and also to provide improved means or bearings for securing the shafts carrying the raising-disks to the wicktube. A further object is to provide an improved wickraiser which shall be simple and economical in construction, and at the same time durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and
pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View in perspective of my improved wickraiser. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the line a m.
A represents a flat wick-tube, and B the base of the burner. .The tube A is provided near its lower end with the vertical elongated slots C, formed near the outer edges of the tubes. In these slots fit the toothed disks D, rigidly secured to the shafts E near their ends.
To the wick-tube A, between the slots C, is soldered or otherwise rigidly secured the plate F, which is laterally fluted, as shown at G, forming a bearing for the inner ends of the shafts E, which latter also pass through perforations or holes formed in the base B, and
are provided on their outer ends with the disks H. By this construction it is evident that each raiser may be operated independently of the other, thereby raising one edge-of the wick without disturbing the other. By these means, when'the wick burns unevenly, one corner may be raised or the higher corner lowered, as desired, instead of extinguishing the light and trimming the wick; or, when desired, the raisers may be operated simultaneously, thereby evenly raising or lowering the wick. Again,
by soldering the bearing-plate F on the outer side of the wick-tube, an even and unbroken bearing-surface is afforded the wick on the inner side of the wick-tube.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to regulate a wick by means of a spur-wheel se cured'to a hollow shaft and a second spurwheel secured to a smaller shaft, which latter passes longitudinally through thehollow shaft, and hence I make no claim thereto.
Myinvention possesses advantages over the above construction, in that it is more simple in construction and can be manufactured at a reduced cost.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 7o ters Patent, is-
The combination, with a wicktube provided with elongated slots, of a bearing secured to said tube between the slots, shafts passing through the base of the burner, and 7 5 having their inner ends .journaled in said bearing, and toothed disks secured to the shafts and fitting in said slots, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
