UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. TOWNSEND, OF HUBBARDSTON, MIOIEL, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, OLIVER O. TOWNSEND, AND HENRY W. HITOHOOOK, OF. SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-TABLE SLIDES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,? 11, dated January 7,1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. TOWNSEND, of Hubbardston, in the county of Ionia and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slides for Extension Tables and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this speciiication, in which- I Figure l is a perspective view of my device detached from a table; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal section upon a central line and Fig. 3 is a cross-section upon line on w of Fig. 2.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my inventionis to increase the efficiency and durability of extension tables; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of the slides, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A and A represent a series of slide-bars, each provided upon one face with two or more tongues, B, and upon the opposite face with corresponding grooves B, which, when said bars are combined, receive and contain the tongues of the contiguous bar. Between each pair of grooves B, at the vertical center of each bar, is provided another more shallow groove, 0, the object of which will be hereinafter explained. Extending horizontally and longitudinally through the center of each bar A is a slot, D, which has a width somewhat less than the width of the central groove 0 and a length equal to about one-half the length of said bar, and
serves for the passage of a bolt, E, the head 6 of which corresponds in shape and dimensions to said groove 0, while its point 0 extends through the solid wood of the contiguous bar and through a washer, F, which is contained in the central groove of said bar,and is riveted down upon said washer.
As shown in Fig. 2, the slots D are arranged so that each one overlaps that of the contiguous bar sufficiently to furnish room for the insertion of the bolt E. If desired, a bolt may be placed within each end of each bar, so as to increase the strength and durability of their connection. The length of the slots governs the distance to which the slides can be drawn,
thebolts, as they strike against the ends of said slots, acting as stops.
As constructed the slides are believed to possess, in a marked degree, strength and durability combined with simplicity and cheap- HESS.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is- The slide-bars A provided with the grooves B and O, the tongues B, and the slots D, and combined by means of the bolts E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of December, 1872.
GEORGE WV. TOWN SEND.
