chusetts, have invented a new and useful I1n-- proveinent in Vises, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a side View of my improved vise, Fig. 2 a top view, and Fig. 3 an end view, a portion being removed in each View in order to better exhibit the operating parts; and Fig. 4 shows a sectional view of the sliding bar B. Fig. 5 is an end view showing the screws c a. Figs. 6 and 7 are top views with a portion of the sliding bar B removed, like letters referring to like parts.
My invention relates to that class of Vises known as parallel bOl]Cl1-VlSQS; and it consists in an improved method of operating the movable jaw by two screws arranged in the same horizontal plane, and in so constructing the vise as to house the operating parts and provide for an adjustment of any loss from wear in the bearings of the screws.
A represents a fixed jaw, which may be attached to the bench or stand 0. Sliding through the fixed jaw is the bar B in the manner common in bench-vises. To the horizontal sliding bar B is attached the movable j aw A. Inclosed within the bar B, I place the two screws E and E, which work in nuts attached to the fixed jaw A, one of which is shown by the dotted lines at I, Fig. 1. The screws E and E have the gears F F attached and turning in recesses in the movable jaw. Outside of the gears F and F are the tapering bearings H and H, which turn in properly-formed sockets in the capplate G. In a recess in the movable jaw A is the gear I, whichis attached rigidly to the shaft J, and may be operated by the sliding lever J, by which the two screws may be rotated, causing the movable jaw A to advance or recede from the fixed jaw. The bar B has two chambers, D and D, containing the screws E and E,
and a central rib, N, which renders the bar B stronger and stiffer, and affords the three bearings b b 1), instead of but two, as is the case by the ordinary method of constructing vises. By arranging the screws E and E in the same horiaontal plane, I am able to keep the faces of the jaws A and A parallel horizontally when the work is seized by the jaws at one side of their center. Two or more screws have been used,
the positions of the screw and the two sliding bars or rods representing the angles of a triangle. By my construction I operate the jaws by two screws, one on each side of the center, and both in the same horizontal plane, so that in case the work is held. in the center of the jaws both of the screws tend to draw the jaws together, as shown in Fig. 7, in which 5 represents a bolt held between the j aws of the vise, the strain of the screw E drawing the jaws together and having a tendency to cause the face of the movable jaw A to assume the position indicated by the broken line 6 e,which will be resisted by the screw E drawing the jaws together, and the force exerted by the screws E and E will be indicated by the arrows l and 2 but in case the work is held at one end of the jaws, the screw next the work will draw the jaws toward each other, and the screw farthest from the work will push the jaws apart, the work as held between the jaws acting as a fulcrum, as shown in Fig. 6, in which the bolt 5 is represented at one side of the jaws, and the force of the screw E nearest the bolt will be shown by the arrow 4:, which will have a tendency to draw the jaws together and cause the face of the movable jaw A to assume the position indicated by the broken line (Z, which will be resisted by the screw E in holding thejaws apart, (shown by the arrow 3,) thereby maintaining the faces of the jaws parallel. When the screws E and E act to draw the movable jaw toward the fixed jaw, the gears F and F press against the bottom of their respective recesses in the jaw A, and when the screws push the jaw A away from the fixed jaw, the tapering ends H H of the screws press against the cap-piece G,whieh maybe attached to the jaw A by the screws a a, or in any other suit-- able manner. The opening in the movable j aw A is made slightly larger at K than the screw, so as to form the sole bearing for the geared end of the screw at the tapered ends H H. By
this means I am able to secure a more perfect fit and can more readily furnish a tapered steel bushing for the bearing, if such should be desired, and by the adjustment of the cap-piece G,I can take up any wear in the bearings, and at the same time keep the gears F F properly centered, so as to run true with the gear I. The screws E and E are securely protected in the chambers D and D from falling chips and dirt.
In order to secure a convenientrotation of the lever J, the screws E E should be made with a left-hand thread, or, if desired, one screw may have a right and the other a left hand thread, and the two be geared directly together,thus doing away with the drivinggear I. j r
. I do not claim, broadly, the use of two screws for actuating the movable jaw of a vise, both being arranged in the same horizontal plane; nor do I claim, broadly, the use of two screws so geared together as to act simultaneously; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a parallel benchvise, as described, the combinatiomwith the movable jaw A and sliding bar B, of the two actuating-screws E and E, arranged in the same horizontal plane, housed within said bar B, and so geared together as to act simultaneously, as and for the purpose Set forth.
2. The combination, in a parallel bench-vise, as described, of the two actuating-screwsE E, arranged in the same horizontal plane within the bar B, and having the tapered ends H H, and a cap piece, G, with tapered recesses, forming bearings for the tapered ends of the screws, as and for the p'urpose set forth.
3. In a parallel bench-vise, having the two actuating-screws E and E, housed within the sliding bar B, and both in the same horizontal plane, the chambered sliding bar B, having a central rib, N, as and for the purpose set forth.
