BENCH-VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 435,954, dated September 9, 1890.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN TRIPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockholm Depot, in the county of St. Lawrence and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Mechanics Bench-Vise, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to improvements in mechanics work-bench vises which are attached to tables or work-benches, wherein the side of the table or work-bench to which the vise is attached acts as one of the jaws of the vise; and the object of my improvement is to provide a movable vise-jaw equal in length to that of the table or bench to which it is attached, which will produce an equal pressure throughout its entire length, and which is operated with one screw at one end of the bench, the same as an ordinary vise. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the table or bench with the improved vise attached, with dotted lines showing the position of the parts of the vise which are located on the under side of the bench; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the end of the bench, showing the working of the screw in the rotary nut placed in the forward or left-hand end of the lever; Fig. 3, a sectional view of the lever in perspective with corresponding section of the rotary nut in each end of said lever; Fig. 4, a perspective view of the improved vise detached from the bench; and Fig. 5 a perspective view of the rotary cut.

A is the table or work-bench, to which the improved vise is attached.
B is the left-hand or forward depending bar of the vise through which screw F passes.
C is the right-hand depending bar of the vise through which bolt J passes, which connects it with the right-hand end of lever H.
D is a horizontal beam connecting depending bars B and C at their tops, and with them constituting the movable jaw of the vise.
E is a metal plate made fast to the outside surface of depending bar O, over the head of bolt J to prevent the saine from shoving back through the depending bar when the vise is being opened.
F is the screw passing through depending bar B and working in the rotarynut I in the left-hand end of lever H, and by manipulating which the vise is openedand closed.
The depending bars B and C may be kept fixed in a perpendicular position through the medium of any suitable device, that marked G consisting of notched plates attached to the bottoms of said depending bars by means of bolts marked M and passing through near the bottom of the opposite bench-legs and acting upon pins or bolts marked L as ratchets, as shown in the drawings, forms no part of my present invention.
H is a lever swinging in ,its center upon bolt N through cross or transverse piece K, and in the right-hand end of which a rotary nut I is placed, in which bolt J is screwed, and in the left-hand end of said lever is placed another rotary nut I, in which screw F works. I is a movable rotary and cylindrical nut in which screw F works in the left-hand end of lever H. The nut placed in the right-hand end of the lever in which bolt J isgscrewed is the same. This nut, through its rotary motion, is self-adj usting in its bearings upon the lever in any position which the latter is capable of taking.
J is a bolt furnished with a head which is countersunk in the outside surface of depending bar O and covered with plate E. The bolt passes thence through said depending bar and into rotary nut I in the rightehand end of lever I-I, the openings in said lever through which pass bolt J and screw F, respectively, being sufficiently wide to admit of a sidewise movement on the part of said bolt and screw without their becoming cramped.
K is a transverse piece placed across and made fast to the under side of the center of the bench, and through which lever I-I passes, and to which said lever is attached by means of bolt N.
N is a bolt passing vertically through the center of transverse piece K, and also through the center of lever H, holding said lever in its place and furnishing it with a pivot upon which it may turn.
I am aware that prior to my invention benchvises have been in use which contained the principle which would be embraced in screw F Working in conjunction with depending bar B, with the screw Working in an ordinary nut attached to the opposite bench-leg. I therefore do not claim that as a part of my invention in a broad sense; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination, the table forming the fixed jaw, the horizontal beam D and the depending bars B and C, forming the movable jaw, the lever II, and the actuating-screw F,
and the bolt J, connecting the Vmov( ble jaw and the lever, substantially` as described.
2. In combination, the table A, forming the ixed jaw, the beam D and depending bars zo B and C, forming the movable jaw, vthe lever H, supported by the frame of the table, the rotary nuts I in the ends of the lever, the screw F, and the bolt J engaging the nuts and connected to opposite ends of the bea1n,sub z 5 stantially as described.
