Description
PATENT FFICE-s ROBERT L. FRENCH, on WELLINGTON, OHIO.
TALLY=CARD HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,367, dated May 13, 1884.
Application filed July 9, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. FRENCH, of \Vellington, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tally-Card Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description thereof.
The improvement above alluded to relates to a device for securing to the arm a tallycard holder or tablet for tallying numbers, weights, feet, 850., when counting, measuring, or handling lumber or other articles of merchandise, so that both hands of the person may be free to handle the articles instead of having one of them occupied in holding the tablet or card whereon the records are to be made. A further and more full description of the invention is as follows, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of a tallycardholder. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 shows the cardholder closed.
Like letters of reference denote likepartsiu the several views.
The device for holding tally-cards may consist of one or more sections or leaves. If of more than one,they are to be eonnectedto each other by a hinge-joint, as shown in Fig. 1, which represents a card-holder of two leaves, A and B, connected to each other bya hingejoint, 0, that they may be folded one upon the other when not in practical use, as shown in Fig. 3. Each leaf may be a tablet of any convenient size, and made of any suitable material-as paper, papier-maohhaving aprepared surface on which records can be made and erased, as required.
The card-holder is provided with loops G and F. To the loop G is secured one end of an elastic band or strap. The opposite end thereofis provided with a hook whereby to connect it to the loop F,for fastening the cardholder to the arm around which the band is passed.
Instead of an elastic band and hook, astrap and buckle, clasp, button, or other equivalent means may be used for that purpose, so that it can be safely carried about onthe arm while notimmediately needed,but whiclnwhen needed, can be readily brought in position for that purpose.
It will be observed that the tablets or sections shown in Fig. l have upon their edges lips or hooks a, b, and c, bent. inward overthe face thereof. Said lips may be more or lessin number, and are forholding tally-cards,tabs,or any other similar articles to the tablet or sections of the card-holder, which aresli-ppedunder the lips, as seen in Fig. 1, in whichDand E represent lumbermens tall y-cards, that may be readily withdrawn from under the lips, to be replaced by others. Should there be several leaves or tablets making up the cardholder,the outer ones may form covers for protecting the records made on those within from erasure while the wearer. of the card-holder is handling articles, or to shield them in case of storms.
- The elastic band used in fastening the tablet or card holder to the arm may also be used to bind the hinged leaves or tablets together when they are closed and not in immediate use.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tally-card holder consisting ofsections A and B, connected to each other by ahingejoint, that they may be opened and closed one upon the other, the edges of which sectionsbeing provided with lips or hooks turned in-- ward over the face thereof, under which lips tally-cards or tablets are inserted and retained in place while being used, in combination with an elastic band or strap for securing the cardholder to the arm, substantially as set forth.
2. The card-holder arranged in two sections, jointed together that they may fold up, and provided with lips a, b, and c, lapping on each section, respectively, in combination with the tablet, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
