ADJUSTABLE PRICE TAG.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, State of lalifornia, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Price Tag, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in tags and has particular reference to an adjustable price tag made to allow the exhibitor of certain goods to change the markings on the tag so that any combination within the range of the device may be readily made up. i

It is particularly proposed in this con nection to mount a plurality of bands in the rear of a holder, which latter is provided with an aperture in such a manner that each band may be individually drawn past the aperture to allow the different markings on the band to be made visible from theopposite side. If used as a price tag, the main markings will be figures so that if three bands are used any combination of three figures may be produced. Further features of my invention will appear as the specification proceeds.

The preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows a perspective front view of my device; Figure 2 a perspective rear view with one of the bands shown unfolded; Figure 3 a vertical section taken along line III-III of Figure 1; and Figure 4 an enlarged section through a portion of the band. While I have shown only the preferred form of the invention, I wish to have it understood that various changes or modifications may be made within the scope of the claims hereto attached without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In its preferred from my device comprises a holder (1) consisting of a flat plate (2) having lateral flanges (3) and rods (4) and (5) supported between the upper and lower ends of the flanges. In its central portion the plate (2) is formed with a horizontal aperture (6).

The two rods (4L) and (5) are disposed at a distance from the plate sufficient to allow one or more bands (7) which may be formed as endless belts, as shown in Figure 2, to pass between the back of the plate and the rods. The band (7) is made of a plurality Serial No. 681,559.

In actual construction two strips of cloth material (11) of a length corresponding to that of the entire band and of a width corresponding to the width of the sections (8) are placed on opposite sides of the sections in such a manner that a certain distance is maintained between the sections in which the two strips are pasted together and constitute a loose or hinged connection between the two adjacent sections.

Each section is marked to represent a certain character or figure in the manner shown in Figure 2, the markings being preferably made on either side of each section so that the operator while adjusting the device on the rear side of the holder may immediately observe from the readings of the rear side what character is exposed through the aperture in front.

Each band is preferably formed in such a manner that when one of the sections is in an operative position to expose a character through the aperture, the two adjacent sections fill the space between the two rods so that the joints on the ends of these two sections allow the band to be folded over the rods. The total number of sections used should preferably be four times that con lined between the two rods so that the band may be doubled or redoubled to lie flat against the back of the plate and to fill the space controlled by the two rods t) and (5).

A number of bands are preferably arranged in parallel relation so that different combinations of figures or characters may be made. It will be noted from the drawing that each band consists of twelve sections, ten of which have the ten single numerals printed thereon, while the other two have any other marking such as pound, dozen, or the like.

To hold the bands in place after they have been folded over the back of the holder, I provide springs (12) swinging on eyelets (13) in the upper end of the holder and adapted to be swung over the folded band so as to hold the same.

The use of my device should be readily understood from the foregoing description. Assuming the price of an article to be exhibited is $7.05, the three bands are adjusted one after the other so as to expose the three characters 7, O and 5. This adjust-- ment can be made without looking at the front of the device, since the exhibitor can ascertain the reading on the front from the reading on the back of the band. After the three bands have been properly adjusted, they are folded and re-folded in the manner shown in Figure 2, and the springs areswung into position to hold the folded bands in place.

I claim:

1. An adjustable tag of the character described, comprising a holder formed with an aperture therein and with parallel guides supported on opposite sides of the aperture and a band slidable between the holder and the guides having a plurality of characters marked thereon adapted to be selectively made visible through the aperture.

An adjustable tag of the character described, comprising a plate formed with an aperture therein and a band slidable on the back thereof comprising a plurality of loosely jointed sections adapted to be selectively made visible through the aperture, the sections and the band being dimensioned to allow'the band to be doubled upon itself and redoubled within the plate area.

7. An adjustable tag of the character de scribed, comprising a plate formed with an aperture therein and a band slidable on the back thereof comprising a plurality of loosely jointed sections adapted to be selectively made visible through the aperture, the sections and the band being dimensioned to allow the band to be doubled upon itself and redoubled within the plate area, and removable means for holding the redoubled band in place.

8. An adjustable tag of the character described, comprising a plate formed with an aperture therein and a band slidable on the back "thereof comprising a plurality of loosely jointed sections adapted to be selectively made visible through the aperture, the sections and the band being dimensioned to allow the band to lie flat against the plate within the plate area, and removable means bearing on the back of the band for holding the same in place.
