Description
G. G. GAVE.
FALSE BOTTOM FOR MASH TUNS.
Patented May 6, 1884.
FIG. 2
(No Model.)
- INVENTO'R yarns i lll GEORGE GORDOENWEMV OF ATEN'r fl 1 ,l; I ifii lttal eowoih FOR MASH=TUNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,172, dated May 6, 188%.
Application filed June 25, 15. 3, Renewed zi'pril l0, H 84. (No model.) Talentod in England October 1 l, IRSI, No. 4,4ll.
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and. 1 se the same, reference being had to the accoin )anyin g drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificationthat is to say: I. i My said inventionn hich relates to an improved false bottom for mash-tuns, hop backs, or other vessels for the purpose of drainage consists of a plate of east-iron or other suitable metal or material, having holes east or drilled therein, which holes on one side are taper or otherwise suitably shaped, and countersunk on the opposite side. In these holes cylinders or caps of copper or other suitable metal or material, closed at one end with a head perforated with a number of line holes, and open at the other end, are inserted. These cylinders or caps, wheuof metal, may be secured in the holes by being swelled alter insertion in the plate by the aid, of a centerpunch, the cylinders or caps, when of china or other inelastic material, being scoured in the said holes by other suitable r equivalent means, such as by cementor he1=;p packing.
In order that my said invention may be properly understood, I now proceed more particularly to set forth the, system, mode, or manner in or under which the saizne is or may be used or practically carried into effect, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures marked thereon-that is to say:
Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of a portion of a east-iron plate with some of the copper cylinders or caps inserted therein. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3, drawn to a smaller scale, represents a plan of one or the segmental plates of a perforated false bottom, showing the arrangement of a number of the cylinders or caps inserted within the perforations of the same. As shown more particularly in Fi 1, the ilhte B of the false bottom is formed with holes therein. At one side of the plate each such hole is formed with a countersunk, b, and at the other side with a recess, 0, to receive a flange on the cylinder or cap. The cylinders or caps A are formed of a corresponding shape, and are inserted within the said holes or perforations through the plate, the upper ends of the said caps be ing closed with heads a, perforated with a number of line holes, a, and when placed in si'm, with the flanges If resting within the recesses '1), each such cap, when of metal, is expanded into the countersunk part of the hole by applying a center-punch or equivalent expandirig-instrument.
In lieu of constructing the caps A. of copper, they may be formed of any other suitable metal or material. The plates 13 of the perforated false bottom also may be constructed of any other metal or nm-terial than east-iron. For example, in applying my invention to draining in slate tanks and earthenware tanks For acid baths, the cylinders or caps maybe formed of glass, china, porcelain, or other suitable material; and in lieu of inserting the said caps within the plate or plates of the false bottom, in the manner shown in the accompanying drawings, the caps may be provided with cement, asbestus, hemp, or other packing, in order to secure them within the holes of the said plate.
Having now described and particularly ascertained the nature 01' my said invention and the system, mode, or manner in or under which the same is to be used or practically carried into effect, I would observe that the invention is applicable to a variety of purposes where draining is required to be effected through line perforations; and what I consider to be novel and original, and therefore claim as the invention secured to me by the hereinbeforeimpart-recited Letters Patent, is
1. The improved false bottom for mash-tuns, hop-backs, or other vessels for the purpose of drainage, constructed of plates, in the piercings or perforations of which plates caps or cylinders A, with heads a having fine holes therein, are fitted, substantially as hereinbefore described.
operating; as and, for the purpose herein set IO forth, and shown by the drawings.
In testimony whereof I, the said GEORGE 5 ing purposes, the piercings or holes in the plate B, formed with countersink b and recess b, for receiving the cylinders or caps A, formed of corresponding shape, and prox'ided with heads a with )(n-forations a. constructed and GEORGE GORDON CAVE. \Vil'nesses:
(mom,- n l lemon, EDWARD ll'ounoM,
Roi/1 of Fr'nng Mud/0rd, Bucks.
2. In a false bottom for straining or drain- I GORDON CAVE, have hereto set my hand.
