To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JULIUs G. GRIMMELL, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved lVatch-Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device adapted to be held and secured in a watch-pocket for the purpose of holding the watch in place in the pocket, and to prevent its being withdrawn by pickpockets, 82c.

The invention consists in a casing provided with two swinging stirrups, which are thrown from each other by springs, and from the free ends of which a hooked fork is suspended, against which the watch strikes when it is placed in the casing, thereby throwing the stirrups upward and toward each other, and permitting them to be locked and held in position by a suitable catch, whereby the stirrups will prevent the withdrawal of the watch from the casing.

The invention also consists in various parts 7 and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective viewof my improved watch-protector, showing a watch held in the same. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the watch-protector on the line :20 m, Fig. 3, and with the neck shown in section. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional plan View of the push-pin and the inwardly-projecting neck on the line 2 2, Fig. 2.

A semicircular casing, A, has one side, 13, enlarged to form a circular plate, to which a like plate, 0, is held by a circular rim, D, the plates B and 0 being held a short distance from each other. The rim is provided at the top with a downwardly-projecting neck, E, adapted to receive a push-button, F, secured to the upper end of a pin or wire, G, to the 'lower end of which a crosspiece or anchor, H, is fastened, which has its endsbent upward slightly. A spring, I, surrounding the pin G and resting on the bottom of the neck E, presses the button F upward. The pin G is provided with a laterally-projecting stud, a, which can be passed into ahorizontal quadrant-groove, b, in the neck E, thus forming a bayonet-lock. Two stirrups, J, are pivoted to the middle of the upper edge of the plate A ofthe casing A, and by a pivot, d, to the middle of the plates B 0, one shank of each stirrup passing through a longitudinal slot, K, in the rim D, of which slots there is one at each side of the neck. The shanks between the plates B O are not pivoted at theends, but about one-third of their length from the ends, so that a part of 1 each shank projects beyond the pivot d. A spring, L, is coiled around the pivot (I, and its two upwardly-projecting ends rest against studs 9, projecting from the inner shanks of the stirrups, and thus swings the stirrups from each other and downward.

The inner shank of each stirrup J is provided on the inner edge with. a stud or pro jection, M, on which the ends of the anchor H can catch. The casing A is provided in its bottom with a transverse slot, N, through which an arm,0,projects,which arm is formed on the lower end of a hook-fork, 1?, having hooks Z formed on the ends of the prongs, which hooks hang on those parts of the shanks of the stirrups projecting beyond the pivot 61. The casing A is held and secured in the vest or watch pocket by a pin, Q, or analogous device. 1

The operation is as follows: Then the watch is not in the casing, the stirrups J are swung downward, and are held in this position by the spring L. If the stirrups are in this position, the fork P will be raised and its arm 0 drawn to the top of the slot N. The positions of the parts, as described above, are shown in Fig. 2 in dotted lines. If the watch is passed into the pocket, it strikes the bottom arm, 0, of the fork and draws the said fork downward.

The hooks Z on the ends of the prongs draw the inner ends of the shanks of the stirrups J downward, thereby swinging the cross-pieces of the stirrups upward and over the watch, as shown in Fig. 1, and they are held in this position by the anchorH, over the catchesof I00 which the studs or projections M have slid. The anchor H is moved downward by press ing on the button 1*, and is then drawn upward by its spring I, and the prongs of the anchor H will catch on the studs M, and thus lock the stirrups J in place. If desired, the pin G can be turned to cause the stud a to pass into the groove 1), thereby preventing the anchor from being moved downward accidentally. If the watch is to be withdrawn,

the pin G is first released, in case it is held by the stud a, by turning it, and it is then pressed downward, whereby the anchor will be moved downward, and will release stirrups J, which are swung downward and outward by the spring L, thus permitting the watch to to be withdrawn. \Vhen the stirrups swing down, the fork is raised and the protector is again set for receiving a watch.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A watch-protector made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a casing provided with swinging stirrups adapted to swing over the watch when the same is in the casing, as set forth.

2. In a watch-protector, the combination, with a casing adapted to receive a watch, of swinging stirrups and a fork or hook hanging from the said stirrups, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a watch-protector, the combination, with a casing adapted to receive a watch, of pivoted stirrups, springs for swinging them apart, and a hook suspended from the said stirrups, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

4. In a watch-protector, the combination, with a casing adapted to receive a watch, of pivoted stirrups, springs for swinging them apart, a hook suspended from the said stirrups, and a catch for locking the stirrups when they are swung upward, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

5. In a watch-protector, the combination, with a casing and swinging stirrups, of springs for pressing them apart, and of a fork hanging from the ends of the stirrups, and provided with a projecting arm passing through a slot in the bottom of the casing, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

6. In a watch-protector, the combination,

with a casing, of swinging stirrups having studs, a catch for locking the stirrups in place, a spring for swinging them from each other, and a fork suspended from the ends of the stirrups, and provided with an arm projecting through a slot in the bottom of the casing, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

7. In a watch-protector, the combination, with the casing A, provided with the plates B O, united by a rim, D, having slots K, of pivoted stirrups J, one shank of each of which passes through a slot K into the space between the plates B C, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

8. In a watch-protector, the combination, with a casing, A, of the swinging stirrups J, having studs M, the anchor H, the pin G, the button F, the spring L, and the fork P, suspended from the inner shanks of the stirrups, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

9. In a watch-protector, the combination, with the casing A, of the swinging stirrups J, provided with studs M, the anchor H, the pin G, the button F, the spring I, the spring L, .and the fork P, suspended from the inner shanks of the stirrups, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. r

10. In a watoh protector, the combination, with the casing A, having plates B O, and a neck, E,provided with a groove, b, of the stirrups J, having studs M, the anchor H, the pin G, the button F, the stud a, projecting from the pin G, the spring L, and the fork 1?, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.

11. In a watch-protector, the combination, with a casing, of swinging stirrups, springs for separating them, and a device suspended from the stirrups and adapted to support the watch, and to be pressed downward by the same, thereby swinging the stirrups toward each other and over the watch, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
