DOOR OHEGK= No. 297,005. Patented Apr. 15, 18.84.
WITNESSES val/W ATTORNEYS Nee STATES FFICE.
PATENT LOUIS RALL, GUSTAV RALL, AND EDWARD RALL, OF GLASGOWV, MISSOURI, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-FOURTH TO MONTE LEHMANN, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,005, dated April 15, 1884.
Application filed January 28, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUIS BALL, GUSTAV BALL, and EDWARD BALL, all of Glasgow, in the county of Howard and State of Missouri,
have invented a new and Improved Door Stop and Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinaf- LO ter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
1 Figures 1 and 2 represent views in perspective of a door, in part, with our improved combined door stop and holder applied in different positions thereto; Fig. 3, a perspective view upon a larger scale of the device detached; Fig. 4, a partly sectional longitudinal view of the same, with the lower portion of the door engaged; and Fig. 5 an under viewof the device in further explanation of its adjustment.
A is a box or case, which may be made of metal and ornamental, or of any suitable form, and which is designed to be secured at its back, by screws or otherwise, to the base-board B of the room or passage, and in such relation to the door S as that the device will come within the range of either the bottom of the door,
preferably near the outer or opening and closing upright edge of the door, as shown in Figs.
2 and 4, or, by changing its position from a 5 vertical to a horizontal one, within the range of said upright edge of the door above its bottom, as shown in Fig. 1.
O is a hook-catch arranged to project sufliciently to engage with the front or outer side 40 of the door, and entering at its back or inner end within the case A, where it is notchedtoothed, or serrated, as at b, to engage with a carrier, D, having a correspondingly roughened or constructed surface, and pivoted, as at 5 d, to the case. A screw, 6, serves to hold said inner end portion of the catch and carrier D in engagement. This screw passes through a slot, f, in the back shank portion of the catch,
to provide for the adjustment of the catch in or out, to suit doors of different thicknesses, and a spring, E, applied to the carrier D, serves to balance the catch or to hold it, so that it will automatically engage with the door.
G is a stop or bumper, arranged to project from the front of the case for the door to strike against when thrown back or open, and so prevent the knob of the door from striking and injuring the wall. This stop may be let into a socket in the front of the case and be readily adjusted or changed, as required. It is proposed to make it of rubber or other soft and more or less elastic substance, or the same combined with metal, in order to do away with noise or jar when the door, in being thrown back, strikes it.
Constructed and applied as described in relation with the door, the device not only acts as a noiseless and yielding stop, but also as a sure catch or fastening that automatically engages with the door to hold it open, and which is readily released when required by simply pressing with the foot on the forward portion of the spring-catch, to throw it out of engagement with the door.
Having thus described our invention, what 7 5 we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the bOX or case A, the catch 0, for holding the door open, made longitudinally adjustable to adapt it to doors of different thicknesses, the pivoted carrier D, constructed to engage with said catch at different points in its adjustment, and the spring E, substantially as specified.
2. The door-check herein described, con- 8 5 sisting of the leasing A, carrier D, pivoted therein and serrated on its under side, the catch 0, slotted at f, and provided with the serrations b, and a set-screw e, for securing said serrated parts when properly adjusted, substantially as set forth.
