(Application filed Doc. 30, 1898.)

l I c WIITNESSES: INVENTO/i' MMQLPLM NITED STATES "ATENT FFICE COMBINED BURGLAR-ALARM AND DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,595, dated October 24, 1899. Application filed December 30, 1398. Serial No. 700,702. (No model.)
To all whon't it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. REIFF, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Burglar-Alarm and Door-Check, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to providea simple and efficient burglar-alarm and doorstop device comprising in its construction a beveled or wedge-shaped base, means for retaining a cartridge therein, and means for automatically firing such cartridge, and thus sounding an alarm, when the door is moved inward upon the base, which latter affords an abutment for the door, as will be hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the device as in actual use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section thereof, on a larger scale, showing the hammer cooked and locked by the trigger. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the hammer released and shot against the cartridge. Fig. 4 is a plan of Fig. 3.
A is a hollow wedge-shaped base comprising two beveled side walls a, a correspondin'gly-inclined top a, and a rear end wall a At the top of the incline is a horizontal portion a in which is formed, adjacent one of the side walls, a perforation a for the reception of a blank cartridge B, which perforation extends entirely through the end of the base. The top of the base is provided in alinement with said perforation with a longitudinal slot a through which extends a lever O, constituting a hammer that is fulcrumed, as at e, on the side wall of the base. The upper end of the lever is provided with a suitably-arranged firing-pin a and with a thumb-piece 0 while the lower end thereof is connected with the side of the base by means of a strong retracting-spring a the tendency of which is to throw the upper arm of the lever toward the cartridge, and thus strike the firing-pin forcibly against the latter.
The hammer is held in its cocked position by means of a trigger D, which comprises a lever fulcrumed within the base at or near the apex thereof. This lever extends upwardly within the slot in the top of the base and is slightly bent or offset, as at 61, so as to lie laterally of the hammer-lever. The offset portion is slightly rounded on its upper edge, as at d, and is provided with a suitably-lo cated notch or recess (1 The rounded por tion is held normally against a laterally-proj ecting stud c on the hammer-lever by means of a torsional spring 01 one end of which is secured to the base, while the other or free end bears against the under side of the trigger.
By the above-described construction it will be seen that when the hammer is cooked, as represented in Fig. 2, the stud on the hammer is in register with the notch in the trig ger and is held thereby in opposition to the force of the spring 0 hen the parts are in this position, the upper edge of the trigger extends slightly above the top of the base. It will also be seen that if the device thus cocked be set adjacent the lower edge of a door, as illustrated in Fig. 1, such edge upon the opening of the door will ride upon the opposing upper edge of the trigger and depress the latter in a manner to liberate the hammer, whereupon the upper end of the latter will be projected in a manner to strike the firing-pin against and explode the cartridge in the end of the casing.
It will be observed that the beveled or wedgeshaped base will permit the opening of the door to a limited extent only, the same affording afixed and positive abutment for the door.
To obviate any liability of the device sliding inward when the door is pushed thereagain,st,I preferably provide on the under side of the base, at or near the point thereof, a depending teat or pin E, that is designed to be forced into the floor or carpet.
I claim as my invention 1. In a combined burglar-alarm and doorstop, a wedge-shaped base having at its larger end a cartridge-retainer, a spring-controlled hammer pivoted in said base, a spring-controlled trigger also pivoted therein and provided with means to hold the hammer retracted or cooked, the upper edgeof said trigger extending along and adjacent the upper edge of the base.
2. In a combined burglar-alarm and doorcheck, a wedge-shaped base comprising beveled side Walls, an inclined top having at its rear a perforated portion and at its side edge a longitudinal slot, a hammer-lever pivoted to said base and extending through the slot, a spring to retract the lower arm of said 1ever, a stud on said lever, a trigger-lever pivoted to said base at or near the apex thereof and extending through and along the said slot, the upper edge of the latter lever being rounded near its free end and provided with a notch with which the said stud registers when the hammer is cooked, and a spring to maintain the trigger-lever normally raised.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM II. REIFF.
