Be'it known that I, HUDSON FERRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing-at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification, to-wit:

This invention relates to a burglar-alarm; and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device set for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device in operation, and Fig. 3 is a side view with one of the side plates removed.

A represents a wedge-shaped block or frame, in the joint of which is pivoted a screw, (1, adapted to be engaged with the floor, door, or

window-casing, or other object with which the alarm is to be used. In this case it is represented as screwed to the floor just within a doorway and in readiness for use. Within the block or frame is hinged an arm, B, having a hammer-head, B, and in the frame is secured a strong spring, B, which bears against the arm and holds it when open, and forces'it shut with sufficient force when closed. The head B is on its outer side made rough, as at 3 5 b, for a purpose presently explained, and it is bored out at b for the reception of a blank cartridge, one of which is shown in position.

The rear end ofthe wedge-frame is formed with an anvilextension, C, in which is secured 0 a small pin or projection, c, which acts as a firing-pin when the. cartridge-holding arm falls, and just beyond this is secured a match- (No model.)

holder, D, which is adapted to receive and retain a wax match in such a position that the roughened surface of the hammer in falling will scrape the head of the match and ignite it.

In practice the device is secured near a door or window, and set as in Fig. 1. Any attempt to open the door or window at once throwsdown the arm B with sufficient force to explode the cartridge and give the alarm, while at the same time the match is ignited and a light given, which exposes the burglar and at .once shows the location of the attempted entrance. The door or window can also only be opened a slight distance, and is then caught upon the wedge-frame, as represented in Fig. 2,

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, in a burglar-alarm, of the wedgeshaped frame A, provided with the screw a, hinged at its point, and the shank C, having the projection c, the spring-actuated arm B, provided with the head B, having serrations b and recess 1), and the removable match-holder D, socketed in the shank C, all arranged and operating substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
