4Alarm Bolt. No. 236,315. v .Patented Jam'. 4,1881.
l r s i U I "a J'JQQJ States raten.,
Arana* lADAM EGOLF, OF ROYERS FORD, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF TO SAMUEL EGOLF, OF SAME PLAGE.
ALARM-BOLT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,315, dated January 4, 1881.
Application filed October 26, 1880.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ADAM EGOLF, a citizen of the United States, residing in Royers Ford, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Alarm-Bolt, of which the following is a specification.
The main object of my invention is to pro vide the locking-bolt ot" a door or shutter with mechanism whereby, on an attempt being made 1o to open the door or shutter, when the holt is projected an alarm will be given, a further object being to secure the boltin position after the sounding of the alarm, and thereby prevent the retraction of said bolt from the outside ofthe door or shutter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a lo'ckingbolt with my improved alarm mechanism; Figs. 2 and 3, sectional plans ot' Fig. 1, and Figs. 4 and 5 zo detached perspective views of parts of the alarm mechanism. y
A represents part ot' a window-shutter, and B part ofthe opposite shutter; or B may represent part of a door-frame, and A part of a door opening outwardly. For the purpose of this description, however, I will regard these parts as window-shutters. The shutter A carries on the inside aplate, D, with staples a for the retention and guidance of the bolt E, 3o and the shutter B has'a plate, F, with staples b for the reception and retention ot' the end of said bolt when the latter is projected. The boltE has aslot, d, for the reception of a hammer, Gr, which is hung to a suitable pivotpin, e, and is acted' upon by a spring, f, as shown in Fig. 1. The lower portion ot' the slot d extends to the inner face of the bolt E, and in this portion of the slot is pivoted a trigger, i, which is acted upon by a spring, m, 4o and is adapted to engage with a notch, n, in the hammer when the latter is elevated, as shown in Figs. l and 2.- The rear end of the trigger projects from the inner face of the bolt, which is beveled to permit such projection, the heel of the bolt being reduced in thickness, as shown in Fig. 2. An opening, p, is formed in the bolt E for the reception ot' a cap or cartridge, s, the opening occupying such relation to the pivot of the hammer G (Model.)
that when said hammer is depressed its point 5o will occupy the opening.
When the hammer is elevated and is retained in its elevated position by the engagement ofthe front end ofthe trigger 'i with the notch n, the bolt E can be moved backward and forward to fasten or unfasten the .shutter without danger of releasing the hammer, asy no pressure is exerted upon the projecting end of the trigger; but when the bolt is projected and any attempt is made to open the shutter 6o without first retracting the bolt-such, for instance, as au attempt to pry open the shuttersthe angle assumed by the latter causes pressure upon the projecting end of the triggert and operates the latter so as to release the hammer Gr, which descends and explodes the cap or cartridge s in the openingp. (See Fig. 3.) After its descentthe point ot' the hammer rests in the opening p, and said hammer embraces the staple a, so that the retraction of the bolt 7o to release the shutters cannot be effected without tirst elevating the hammer.
The various forms of hammers and triggers can be adopted in carrying out my invention, those shown merely embodying my invention in a simple form which has been found to be effective in practice.
When the bolt is applied to a pair ot shutters or a door opening inwardly the shape of the bolt and the location ot' the trigger will 8o have to be modified accordingly.
I claim as my inventionl. Alocking-bolt constructed for the regeption ot' a cap or cartridge, and carrying a hammer, Gr, and trigger z', and springs for oper- 85 ating the same, as set forth.
2. The combination of the hammer G and trigger t' and their springs with a bolt constructed for the reception ot' a cap or cartridge, and having a slot, d, for receiving said ham- 9o mer, trigger, and springs, as set forth.
3. The combination of a pair of shutters, or a door and door-frame, a plate, F, having staples I), a plate, D, having staples a, and a bolt, E, adapted to said staples a and b, provided with a hammer, G, and trigger t', and constructed for the reception of a cap or cartridge, as specified.
4. The combination ofapnir ot' shutters, or projected and the hammer depressed, said :L door and door-frame, :t plate, F, having stuhammer will embrace the outer staple, a, and ples l), a plate, D, having staples a, and a slotconfine the bolt longitudinally thereto, as set 15 ted bolt, E, adapted to the staples a and b, forth.
5 provided with al1aimner,G,and trigger/,and In testimony whereof I have signed my having its inner face beveled or eut away to nume to this specification in the presence ot' perulit the projection of the trigger, as detwo subscribing witnesses. scribed.
5. The combination of the plate D, having ADAM EGOLF' to staples a, with the bolt E, havingan opening, \Vitnesses:
p, and a. hammer hun g in respect to the open- JONAS BIGKHART, ing, as set forth, whereby, when the bolt is HENRY WALKER.
