BUTTON-FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,735, dated April 15, 1884.

Application filed September 24, 188?.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WALLACE H. Doncn, of Mishawaka, in the county of St. Joseph, in the State of Indiana, have invented a new and ,useful Button-Fastener, applicable to fastening buttons upon garments, particularly upon shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and accurate description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 represents my fastener detached. Fig. 2 represents the same as applied and in action. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the central part.

The object of my invention is to provide a button-fastener of wire, at once cheap, efficient, and easily applied, and so fashioned that it cannot fail in its duty by working out of place, and cannot give annoyance by catching in the stocking or other garment with which it may come in contact while in use.

I am aware that many button-fasteners have been devised; but I am not aware of one which is cheap, entirely efficient, so easily applied that any person may use it, and without tools, and entirely guarded against catching in the garments with which it may come in contact while in use. These are characteristics of my invention, which I will now particularly demust therefore always lie flat upon the material to which the button is attached. In practice, I prefer to make the T-head portions by bending the end of the wire around in a curve, (Z, more or less flattened. i,

brought back close to the central part, c, and confine the button eye to the said central portion.

Third. One or both terminals of the wire are bent downward so as to penetrate or rest firmly upon the material It, to which the button is fastened, as at g. I say one or both terrni nals are so bent downward, because it is necessary to leave one of said terminals free in or der to introduce the fastener through the button-eye, while the other terminal may be made to bear hard against the part c, and may be however, it may be preferable to bend both terminals down, as at g, and the fastener may then be introduced at either end through the button-eye. It is useful, mainly, as a guide, to prevent putting thefastener in with the points 9 turned upward to make a depressed bend, i, in the part 6, into which the buttoneye will sink when in proper position, but will be prevented from finding a proper resting-place when the fastener is in improper position.

Having described my invention, I claim'as new- 1. A wire button-fastener constructed with the central part, c, to hold the button-eye, and the T-head portions d d, curved around, substantially as shown, whereby the terminals are brought close to the part e, as described, to prevent displacement of the button-eye.

2. A wire button-fastener with the central part, c, and the T-head portions cl d, the terminals being brought around close to the part 6, and one orboth of them turned downward, as at g, substantially as described.

3. A wire button-fastener having the central part, c, with the depressed bend i, and the T head portions (2 (1, having the terminals bent around near to the part 6, and bent downward, as at 51, substantially as and for the purpose described.
