WINDOW-CURTAIN BAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,649, dated April 8, 1884.

To alii whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, IRA B. TRIPP, of Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement 5 in Window-Curtain Bars, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The obj ect of the invention is the production of a durable and convenient Window-curtain bar for the bottoni of curtains, which may be readily attached or detached from the curtain or adjusted to fit various Widths of curtains; and the novelty therein consists, fmainly, in a slotted met-allie tube, threaded by means of its slot over the lower edge of the curtain, which is held in place within the tube by means of spiral Wires or a bar or other equivalent means previously attached to said edge of the curtain, or by thickening said edge in any manner, all as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

For the better comprehension of my invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a view of the complete tube arranged for telescopic adjustment. lFig. 2 is a vertical central sectionV of the tube, with spirals for holding the curtain Within the tube. Fig. 3 is a view of the same tube as attached to a Window-curtain; and Fig. 4 is a View of a curtain held within a tube by means of a bar, said tube having adjustable end pieces.

In the drawings, Figs. l, 2, and 3 show a slotted metallic tube composed of three parts, A A1 A2, Where the central part, A', diders a little in diameterfrom the end parts, A and A2, so that these'endparts may be slipped telescopically in and out of said central portion to a greater or less extent, and thereby the length of the whole tube be 'materially lessened or increased at will. It is evident that this arrangement may be varied greatly, as is shown in Fig. 4, the only essential being the capacity of the several parts for a greater or less adjustment to suit the various Widths of Windowcurtains. There is a slot, a, the entire length of each of these parts A A A2 in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, which slot is coincident the Whole Y length of the tube when in use; but it will be rals a single one may be used, and instead of any spirals any other convenient means-such as a bar, B, to VWhich the edge ofthe curtain is tacked in the usual Way,or any other meansmay be used of thickening the edge of the curtain, so that While it may be readily threaded endwise in the tube it cannot be Withdrawn from it except edgewise.

To complete the finish of appearance of the tube, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, end plugs, D D', are employed, which may also be slotted like the parts A A A2; but it is evident, also, that these may either Wholly be dispensed With or that any plug or covering-cap, such as in Fig. 4, may be employed, which will serve to close the ends of the tube Without an undue projection of the same on either side beyond the Width of the curtain, and that such cap may or may not be slotted.

This tube or curtain-bar may be madeof any proper sheet metal, or even of tin', and painted or lacquered in any style of ornament.

It will not be very expensive of Jirst cost, will I be very durable, and can be easily detached or replaced-as, for instance, when the curtain is Washed-or it can beapplied to the various Widths of curtains required for various sizes of Windows.

Having thus described my invention, whatY I claim as neur therein, and desire to protect by Letters Batent, is-

1. A Window-curtain bar composed of one or more slotted metallic tubes, substantially as described.
