l @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that we, LANSING JoRALEMoN and NELsoN R. Mani-ir, citizens of the United States, and residents of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; andwedohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved car-coupling. Fig` 2 is a front View. of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. L is a longitudinal horizontal section, and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the coupling-bolt and the sliding` catch.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in all the gures.
Our invention has relation to that class of car-couplings in which a bolt or bar having enlarged and shouldered heads is engaged by a catch in the draw-head; and it consists in the improved constructionand combination of i parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Iny the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates thel draw-head, which has the same outward appearance as the draw-heads used in the common pin-and-link coupling, but has a vertical recess, B, in its outer portion, opening at the top,'and forming at the foremost ends of its sides two vertical ways, C, the lower ends of which are stopped by a cross-piece, D, extending over the foremost portion of the lower end of the recess.
E is a plate fitting over the upper open end of the recess, and resting with its edges upon the edges of the recess, and the under side of this plate is provided at its forward end with a downwardly-projecting plate, F, the edges Gr of which are rabbeted to slide in the vertical ways in the forward end of the recess, while its lower end forms a notch or recess, H, the sides of which form two inwardly-projecting lugs, I, beveled at their forward sides, as shown at J. This plate slides vertically across the mouth of the draw-head, the upper edge of the notch in the lower portion of the plate being at a level with the upper edge of the mouth,
and for the purpose of guiding and bracing the plate a longitudinal rib, K, is secured to the under side of the top plate, from the rear end of which rib projects a vertical guide-bar, L,h which bears with its rear side against the rear side of the recess or bore, guiding the vertical plate in sliding in its ways, and serving together with the rib as a brace when draft is applied to the coupling-bar,which bears with its shoulders against the inner sides'of the beveled lugs, forcing the lower end of the sliding plate forward, and thus forcing its upper end back, which again in turn will throw the strain upon the rib, which will bear against the rear side of the recess, and the strain thus being divided upon this number of parts and over such aspace, the entire sliding frame (the vertical plate, the top plate, the rib, and the vertical bar) will be prevented from binding in its recess, sliding freely in the same regardless of the strain of the coupling-bar upon it. The coupling-bar M is preferably fiat, and forms at each end two laterally-projecting shoulders,
cut'o beveled upon their upper and lower sides, while the upper side oi' the end of the bar is not cut oil, thus forming a rib passing through the upper beveled side of the head formed upon each end of the bar, and the said rib serves, in entering the draw-head between the two beveled lugs upon the sliding plate,to guide the bar, especially while coupling ears standing upon a curve or standing obliquely to each other for any other reason.
For the purpose of raising the sliding plate in uncoupling the bar, a lever, N, forming a handle at its outer end, is pivotedat its inner end between two upright lips, 0, projecting upward from one edge of the draw-head, andl passes through a slot, l?, having its upper and lower ends rounded, in annpright block, Q,
upon the top plate.

as and for the purpose shown und set forth. HORACE ASH,
