. ATTORNEYS. v
UNITED :TATES PATENT OFFICE.
MONROE HUNTER, OF ATTIOA, INDIANA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,330, dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed July 12, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MONROE HUNTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Attica, in the county of Fountain and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying sponding parts in both the figures.
drawings, which form a tion, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved car-coupling, and Fig. 2is a longitudinal vertical section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate part of this specifica- My invention has relation to that class of antomatic ear-couplings in which the link is held in the draw-head by means of a hook having an inclined front edge, allowing the link to raise the hook in entering the draw-head; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the draw-head, which is of the same shape as the draw-head used with the pin-andlink coupling, and which may be fastened in the usual manner to the car, and B is the coupling-link, which is of the usual construction,
0 is a longitudinal recess, having a beveled mouth in the outer end of the draw-head, and has a longitudinal slot, D, in the upper side of the head, extending from the bottom of the recess to iiear the end of the draw-head. A fiat hook, E, the outer end-oilwhich is cut off inclined toward the relar, F, is hinged at its rear end in the said slot, the notch or recess forming the hook or catch. forming at its rear end a shoulder, G, against'which the end .of the link bears, when coupled, in backing the cars. The rear end of the hook is hinged upon a transverse bolt, I-I, passing through the sides of the draw-head and passing through the inner vertical part of a right-angled slot, I, opening with its horizontal part in the rear end of the hook in'such a manner that the slotted end of the hook may be slipped upon the rod, which will bear in the upper end of the vertical portion of the slot, when the hook will remain hinged upon the rod when drawn either outward or pushed inward, the sides of the slot preventing it from moving either way, and the rear end of the hook will bear against the rear end of the slot and the recess in the draw-head, while the front end will bear against the front end of the slot, furthermore preventing the hook from becoming moved out of position when either draft or push is exercised upon the hook by the link. The upper edge of the hookis provided, near its outer end, with a cross-bar, J, which rests upon the upper side of the head upon both sides of the slot, and with an eye, into which a cord or chain may be attached for the purpose of raising the hook when the link is to be released in uncoupling.
The operation of the coupling will be re dily understood, the link in coupling bearing against the outer inclined end of the hook, forcing it upward, allowing the link to be caught by the same, the lower end of which fits into a perforation, K, in the lower side of the draw-head, bearing against the sides of the same when drawn or pushed in either direction, the draft or push upon the hook being divided upon the transverse red, the ends of the recess, and the slot in the upper side of the same, and upon the sides of the perforation in the lower side of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States i The combination, in a ear-coupling, of a draw-head having a longitudinal recess, opening in the end of the head, with a beveled mouth, and having a longitudinal slot in its upper side and a perforation in its under side, a flat hook hearing with its ends against the ends of the slot, having an inclined front edge forming a shoulder to the rear of the hooked part, and having a right-angled slot in its rear end, and a cross-piece at the outer end of its upper edge, provided with an eye, a bar passing transversely through the sides of the head and through the upper end of the slot in the rear end of the hook, and a link, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MONROE HUNTER. Witnesses:
ROBERT MILFORD, CHARLES WILsoN.
