IMPROVED CAR-:COUPLING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,866, dated July 31, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM E. TIOKLER, EZRA T. MARsHALL, and DANIEL M. MAR- sHALL, of Pierceton, Kosciusko county, State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Gar-Ooupling; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side view of our invention taken in the line 00 00, Fig. 2 5 Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section of the same taken in the line y y, Fig. 2.

This invention relates to a new and improved car-coupling of that class which are self-coupling, and which will admit of being uncoupled without the necessity of passing between the cars to effect that result.
The object of this invention is to obtain a simple, strong, and durable coupling of the class specified, and one which will couple with certainty.
A represents a draw-head,which may be applied to the car in the usual manner, and B B are two vertical sliding rods, which are fitted and work in guides to at each side of the drawhead, the upper ends of the rods B B being connected by a bar, G, which extends transversely over the front part of the draw-head, and has a vertical pin, D, attached, which eX- tends down through the draw-head. The rods B B and bar 0 form a sliding frame, which has a tendency to be kept upward or elevated to a certain extent by means of a loaded arm or bar, D fitted on one end of a shaft, E, placed transversly in the rear part of the draw-head, and having its ends extending through the sides of the draw-head, the bar D being fitted on one end, and on the other a bar, F, the front end of the bar D being fitted in a hole in one rod B, and the front end of the other bar F, fitted in the other rod B.
The bar D is loaded or has a weight, G, on its rear end.
The shaft E has a pendent frame, I, attached to the lower end of which the rear end of a sliding bar, J, is connected, said bar extend ing along the lower part of the draw-head and projecting through its front end. This sliding bar J is connected by chains 60 a, to the rear end of a plate, K, which works on an upright, b, in the draw-head, the rear end of said plate being connected by a chain, c, to a spring, L, attached to the upper part of the draw-head. This spring L has a tendency to keep the front end of the plate K pressed down toward the sliding bar J.
M is a lever secured in an upright, 61, on the draw-head, and having a spring, 6, bearing against it, which spring has a tendency to keep the lower end of the lever over the bar 0 and the pin D down through the draw-head.
N is the link or shackle, which may be of the ordinary kind, and through which the pin D passes.
In order to uncouple the cars, all that is required is to actuate the lever M so that it will be free from the bar 0, and the weight G of the bar D immediately raises the pin D, and the link or shackle is released.
When two draw-heads come in contact, the link or shackle N- being in one of them, the outer end of the link or shackleenters the empty draw-head, and the end of the bar J of the empty draw-head will be forced inward or backward, in consequence of coming in contact with the front plate of the draw-head in front of it, and as said bar is connected to the pendent frame I of shaft E, the pin D will be forced down through the link or shackle N, and the lever M will be forced by the spring 6 over bar 0, and the coupling effected.
The whole arrangement is extremely simple and efficient. The plate K keeps the link or shackle in a horizontal position, so that it may enter the draw-head of an adjoining car. This plate is raised when the pin D is raised, in consequence of its connection to the sliding bar J.
