GAR COUPLING. No. 325,622. Patented Sept. 1, 1885.

JAMES \V. NEAL, OF ROANOKE, VIRGINIA, ASSlG-NOR OF OXEHALF TO MORT M. ROGERS, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,622, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed Juno 4, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. NEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a cross-section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a side View.
This invention has relation to car-couplings; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangen'ient of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the draw head, which may be made in solidhar form.
3 indicates a strong lug or catch projection, which is formed on the top of the draw-head, rising from the front portion. The rear part of this projection is formed with one or more concave notches or seats, 0, which are designed to engage the link D of the opposite draw-head. Usually the lug is made with two notches G, having astepped arrangement, the lower notch being farther to the rear than the upper one, so that the cars can be coupled closely. The inclination of the notched rear piece of the lug is such that the bail-link will pass readily over it, moving close to the notchseais, and in forming the rear notched face the center is taken at the lowest position of the link-pivot. Each draw-head is formed with a Vertical slot extending transversely through it, somewhat in rear of the front portion, as indicated at E. The link D is of bail form, and its arms are perforated at F to receive the ends of the pivot bolt or bar G, which on (No model.)
tends through the slot H. The link can therefore he raised or lowered on account of the play allowed by the slot. The arms of the link are extended beyond the seats of the ends of the bolt G to form setting projections K, which, when said link is raised to upright position, are designed to engage the notches L in the sides in of the trigger slide plae P. This slide-plate is connected to the bottom of the front port-ion of the draw-head, usually by means of a bolt, R, which passes through a slot, S, of said plate.
hen the link is set in upright position, the front portion, 2, of the slide-plate projects beyond the front of the draw-head, so that when the cars come together the slide-plate will he pushed back by the opposite draw-head, and will automatically throw the link forward over the catch projection of the opposite drawhead.
In order to uneouplc the draw-heads when close together, thelink is raised sufficiently to disengage its setting projections from the notches of the slideplate.
In making connection with the ordinary link-andpin draw-head, the link is simply thrown over the catch-lug of my draw-head, the link of the latter being allowed to fall down out of the lug.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The combination, with the draw-head having a front catch-lug, of a slide-plate provided with side notches, and the coupling-link pivoted to the draw-head, and provided with extensions of its arms, forming setting projections, which enter the said notches in the slide-plate, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. IV. NEAL.
W'itnesses PHILIP C. h'IASl', M. I. CALLAN.
