Description

i WITNESSES INVENTOR fm1 f fw gam d @www ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ABRAHAM KIMBER, OF MUNCIE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARCOUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,651, dated February 17, 1874; application filed December 6, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ABRAHAM KIMEEE, of
V Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my car-coupler. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Figs and 4 are sectional views of the saine.
This invention has relation to railroad-car couplings of the self-coupling kind. It consists in a novel construction` of knobs or hooked a-nd recessed enlargements on the exposed ends of the draw-bars, in combination with springretainers and uncoupling-arms, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following is a description of my coup ling:
In the annexed drawings, A A represent two draw-bars, which are coupled together by means of an oblong link, O, across the middle of the length of which is a tie-bar, C, for a purpose hereinafter explained. The buffers are constructed exactly alike in every respect; hence it will only be necessary for meto particularly describe one of them. I3 represents a knob or enlargement, which is formed on the upper side of the draw-bar A, at its front end, or that end which is exposed beyond the end of the car-platform. rIhis enlargement B presents a laterally-rounded and backwardly-inclined npper surface, I), at the front termination of which is a scinicircular horizontal recess, a', and notches a a. The rear end of the enlargement B is under-beveled, as shown at c, and laterally rounded, forming a kind of hook on said enlargement. S represents a bifurcated spring, which is arranged horizontally in rear shown in Fig. 3, in which posit-ion the crossbar C' is received in the notches u a, and the rear end of the link is held beneath the spring S. When the bar A with its link thus adjusted is brought suddenly against another bar, A, the link will be moved forward and out of the notches u, and a coupling will be effected.
E represents a recess for receiving the wellknown link for making a coupling in the ordinary way, with a link and pin, the latter being inserted through a hole, c. rlhe recess a', in the top of the enlarged portion B, is also intended for receiving an ordinary coupling link.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*- 1. The draw head A, having the enlargement B and a rear-beveled under surface, c, in combination with the retaining-springs S, to hold the links on its upper surface until draft is applied, substantially as speciiied.
2. The combination of t-he draw-head A, having the enlargement B,and the lifting-ar1n L and spring S, as described.
3. The drawlhead A having enlargement B, in which are notches a a., -in combination with the link having the cross-bar cand the spring S, substantially as specied.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
` ABRAHAM KIMBER. Witnesses:
