" NTTED STATES PATENT EEIGEo IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,462, dated February 2, 1875; application tiled January 11, 1875.
, vation.
The invention relates to novel means whereby cars may be conveniently coupled, securely held in connection, and easily unconpled, all as hereinafter fully described, and subsequently claimed.
A A represent two draw-bars, each. pro,- vided .with a vertical stud, a, on the upper front end. B is a. link, pivoted at b on top of each draw-bar, some distance in the rear of stud a, and provided with two lateral eyes, b bf, which receive loosely the end hooks, c c, of theloent rod (l. D is a rock-shaft, which has central arm d, end arms, di d1, at an angle thereto, and the stops d2 d2, that work against the bearings E E, to limit the lateral play of said shaft.
The arm d is bifurcated at the end, and has eyes, through which is inserted the rod O, that also passes through the end of a pivoted vertical rod, F. The latter also 'passes up obliquely through a loop or eye, G.
drawing forming a part of Between the arm d and the loop G is arranged a spiral spring, H, on the rod F. By raising an end arm, d1, on either side of car, the shaft D throws the arm d over toward the car, and beyond the perpendicular plane, which passes through itself, whereby the spring is made to hold up the link. If, now, the reverse movement takes place at the contact of another car draw-bar, the linkB is thrown over the latters stud a, and firmly held by the spring, which presses the arm al on the forward side of said rod D.
This coupling is secure and reliable, the studs and all parts fast, and not subject to loss by accident or theft, while if one of the cars is switched off the track it becomes immediately detached.
If cars having draw-bars of unequal heights meet it is only necessary to use the lowest link, while the usual holes may be retained to admit of the use of pins.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination, with pivoted link B, of the bent rod C, shaft D, having arm d, vertif cal rod F, and spring H, as and`for the purpose specified.
