To all 'whom it 'may concrn:
Bev it known that I, GEORGE ULsoMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haubstadt, in the county of Gibson; and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Oouplers, of which the following is a fu1l,clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, inwhichi Figure l is a perspeotive View of a dawhead with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same on the line w w of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a deta'il to be referred to.
My invention relates to automatic car-couplings; and it consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of devices; as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
To enableothers skilled in the art to make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe the exact manner in which I have carried it out.
Referring to the drawings, in'which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, A represents adraw-head constructed in the usual manner, and having the usual perforation, a, adapted to receive the couplingp1n.
In one side of the draw-head is formed an opening, b, through which is passed a slotted arm, B, secured to a metal plate, a', located within the draw-head. A flat spring, B', is rigidly attached to the slotted arm B, and has its other end secured to the side of the drawhead; A Vertical rod, O, .is secured to the body of the car at apoint, c, by. an eyebolt or other well-known means, and a shoulder or annular ring is adapted to strike against the eye of the bolt when the rod O is drawn up- Wardv for a purpose hereinafter described. The Vertical rod O has formed near its lower end an angular projection, C', which eXtends over the draw-head, while the portion c' of this angular projection constitutes the coupling-pin, which is held over the draw-head and on a line with the perforation formed in said draw-head.` i
In the extreme lower end of the Vertical rod slotted arm B when the coupling-pin is raised and in position ready for coupling with the link of the approaching car, as shown in Fig. 1. In order to more fully illustrate'my inVention, I have shown in the drawings 'another draw-head, representing it attached to an approaching car. This draw-head is constructed in the usua-l manner, except on the side of the same, I havel secured a plate, D, having an eye or loop, e, and a Vertical groove, e', formed on its front face; or, if desired, the loop and groove can be cast or otherwise made to form an integral part of the draw-head. In this loop and groove rests the lower end of a Verticalrod, E, constructed substantially like the rod O, while an enlarged portion, f, formed on this rod E, is adapted to engage with or rest upon the loop e when the Vertical rod E is not in use. The lower endof the rod E, after passing through the loop, is curved upward and at right angles to the upper portion of the rod, and is so constructed that the portion g will lie beneath the coupling-link. The portion g may be notched, so as to secure a more positive action on the coupling-link. Thus it will be seen that-by simply drawing up the rod E the coupling-link G may be adjusted so as to readily enter the draw-head of another car.v 1
If desirable, I- can attach the Vertical rods O and E to the same draw-head, and on opposite sides of the same; but I prefer to use them independently of each other, or on separate cars, asspecified above.
The operation of my improved coupler is as follows: The Vertical rod E being in the position shown in the drawings, and the coupling-link G thereby. adj usted, the car having the draw- ,head A is caused to approach the'draw-head A, when the coupling-link, on being passed into the said drawhead A, comes 'in contact with the metal plate-B', carrying the slotted arm B, and'forces the said plate and arm outward, thereby releasing the Vertical rod O from its contact with the slotted arm, and allowing the Vertical rod to drop, and causing the coupling-pin to fall into the perforation formed in the draw-head A, thus securely coupling the cars together.
