Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA RIPLEY, OF TROY, NEIV YORK.
WRENCH AND PINCERS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 29,620, dated August 14, 1860.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA RIPLEY, of the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improved Combined Adjustable Trench and Pinchers; and I do hereby declare that the following contains a full and exact description of the same,
reference being had to the. annexed drawings, which make a part of this specification, and in which- Figures l and 2 are side views, and Fig. 3 a front elevation, of one variety of my said improved implement; and Fig. et is a side view of another modification of the same.
Like letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
An adjustable wrench, and a pair of pinchers, have been heretofore combined in one and the same instrument-an example being shown in my United States Patent dated April 7th, 1857. But in that implement it was impossible to have the pincherjaws so secured that they would always be opposite to and even with each other, or constantly in the proper place for use; for in moving the wrench-jaws apart to take in nuts of various sizes, the pincher-jaws were unavoidably moved endwise in opposite directions, so as to make one pincher-jaw project beyond the other and render it necessary to readjust the pinclier-jaws again, before using the implement as a pair of pinchers. And with that pincher-wrench it was necessary to incline t-he wrench-j aws toward each other at their outer ends, in the operations of setting them farther apart and was a practical difficulty or much inconvenience in applying the wrench-jaws to, and removing them from the nuts or bolts to be turned. Those defects are obviated by, or do not exist in, my present invention or improved combined wrench and pinchers, which consists in the arrangement of two wrench-jaws, A, B, on one handle, C, of a pair of pincher-jaws, D, E, the outer wrench-jaw, A, being fixed and the inner one, B, fitted to slide upon that handle, C; and the other handle, F, of the pinchers, and the said sliding jaw B, being respectively formed or provided with teeth g, z, Figs. l and 2, or with a screw, z', nut, y', and projection 7J, or other equivalent devices, by which the sliding jaw B, and the-handle F may be engaged together, and the said sliding jaw thereby held'fast, at various distances from the fixed jaw A,-all substantially as shown and .indicated by the annexed dra-wings.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the fixed and sliding wrench-j aws, A, B, upon one handle, C, of a pair of pinchers, substantially as herein represented, the other handle, F, of the pinchers, and the sliding wrench-jaw, being formed to engage together, substantially as herein described.
EZRA RIPLEY.
IVitnesses AUSTIN F. PARK,
J. J. SAVAGE.
