SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,344, dated November 28, 1882.

The invention consists in constructing and combining certain parts of an axle-nut wrench, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a side'view, partially sectional, of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
The wrench, as shown, is an ordinary wagon or carriage wrench formed with a socket portion, A, for the nut and handle portion B. The handle B is grooved upon one side from the socket A to the outer end to receive the rod 0, that is bent to the form of the handle, and projects at one end into the socket A, through an aperture in the side thereof. The outer end of this rod is bent at right angles and extends through a slot, at, in the handle, so as to receive a knob, b, by which the rod can be moved endwise. Upon the rod O is a spiral spring, d, which is fitted to retain the rod with its end projecting into the socket A.
This projecting end is beveled or otherwise .shaped to take a notch that is to be cut in the corner of the nut.
nut as usual, the rod O being at the same time drawn back by means of its knob 11, and after the wrench is in place the rod is to be allowed to spring forward, so that its end shall take the notch in the nut. moved, as usual, by turning the wrench, and the nut will be prevented from falling out of the wrench by the gripping-rod C, so that the nut can be again replaced, and the necessity of handling the nut is entirely avoided. By this device nuts can be removed from carriage or wagon axles without soiling the hands, and much more conveniently than it can be done with the ordinary wrench. The notch in the nutis not essential, as the wrench will retain the nut Without a notch.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the socket A, having a rear hole, and the slotted handle B, having a longitudinal groove, of the spring-actuated rod 0, passing with one end into the socket, movable in the handle-groove, and bent up at the outer end to receive a knob, b, as and for the purpose specified.
