TRACE-TRIMMING.
SPECIFICATION forming partI of Letters Patent No. 296,110, dated April 1, 1884.
Application filed December 14, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JAMES M. BAsrNeER, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvement in Trace-Trimmings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide ready means for attaching the belly-band and back-band, or both, to a longtrace without cutting or weakening the trace. Heretofore the belly-band and back-band have been connected to long traces by securing a loop or openframe to the trace by sewing or otherwise, 'and connecting the back-band and bellyband with the upper `and lower bars of this loop. This is objectionable, because it requires the trace to be cut, and because the loop is xed to the trace and cannot be shifted to adapt it vto horses of diiierent sizes. These difficulties are avoided by my improved tracetrimming; and my invention consists of the improvements in the construction of the trimming and in the combination of the trimming with the parts with which it is connected, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a harness provided With my improved trace trimming. Fig. 2 is a side elevation on an enlarged scale of the trace-trimming, the connecting` parts being removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section in line :c a', Fig. 2. Fig.j 4 is a vertical section in line y y, Fig. 2. i i
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures. i
A represents the trace, which is connected at its front end by a clip to the hame-staple, and provided at its rear end with acockeye or other device, whereby it is attached to the whifiietree.
B represents the back-band, andOthe bellyband. Y
D represents/my improved trace-trimming, consisting of a bed or plate, d, against the outer side of which the trace A rests, and which is provided at its front and rear ends withloops e e', through which the trace passes, and at its upper end with a loop, f, to which the back-band is attached, and at its lower edge with a loop, g, to which the belly-band is secured. The rear loop may be provided with a second loop, h, to which the. side strap of the` breeching may be secured. The bed d is made convex on its face or outer side, so as to bend the trace, as represented in Fig. 3, whereby the trimming is securely held on the trace against longitudinal displacement. The bed cl is also constructed along its upper and lower edges with outwardlyprojecting shoulders or ledges i', forming a recessed seat, in which the trace embeds itself. The trace is drawn through the loops e e before the clip and cockeye are secured to its ends. After these parts are secured to the trace, they prevent the trimming from becoming detached from the trace.
It is obvious that this trimming may be shifted on the trace to adjust it to the position in which the back-band and belly-band are required to be placed. The trimming D relieves the trace from all wear of the belly-band and back-band, .and thereby preserves the trace, and, as the trimming can be shifted on the trace, the latter can be thoroughly oiled from time to time, whereby the life of the trace is materialy lengthened.
In that class of harness in which no backband is employed the upper loop, f, may be omitted.
I claim as my invention-- l. The trimming D, consisting of :a convex bed, d, raised end loops, e e, through which the trace can be passed, an upper loop, f, for the attachment ofthe back-band, and a lower loop, g, for the attachment of the belly-band, substantially as set forth. i
2. The combination, with a trace, of a trimming, D, composedof a convex bed, d, and raised loops e c', through which the trace is passed, and a lower loop, g, to which the belly-band is attached, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the trace A, backband B, and belly-band O, of a trimming, D, composed of a convex plate, d, provided with raised end loops, e e', through which the trace is passed, an upper loop, f, to which the backband is attached, and a lower loop, g, to which the belly-band is attached, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of December, 1883..
