The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in windowsash holders and fastenings; and the object thereof is to provide a simple and'convenient means for raising or lowering the upper sash and holding it open at any point desired, or securely locking it closed to the lower sash, whereby the operation `of the device is rendered more convenient and reliable in its action. This object I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the window-frame, and and lower sash, respectively. To the sash B, at its top,

which passes over a grooved pulley, b, secured to the top of the window-frame, said pulley being supported in a swiveled hanger. The cord a extends down between a friction-roller, d, and a cam, D, provided with a suitable handle for operating it, and are both pivoted to and between the upper cross-piece of the sash C and aplate, F.

Extending through the plate F and through the upper cross-piece of the sash E is a bolt, G, a spring, e, being coiled around it, andits ends bearing against the face of the plate and an annular shoulder, f, on `the bolt. The

spring e causes the bolt G to be forced outward to engage with a hole, g, in the lower crosspiece, h, of the sash C when it is desired to lock the two sashes together in a closed posi- B C the upper cross-piece h, immediately over the hole g, and is perforated to register with the hole when secured in place. The cross-piece h of the sash B is beveled in a direction toward the sash O, while the lower sash at its upper crosspiece, k, is beveled in an opposite direction, as shown in Fig. 2, so that pieces of the sashes come together a tight and perfect joint will be for1ned.- The beveling of the cross-pieceh when the sash B is raised enables the cross-piece to ride over the end of the bolt G, the end of said bolt being beveled, as shown at Z, to facilitate the joint operation of the two, the spring automatically forcing the bolt in engagement with the hole g when brought in line therewith. The bolt `Gr has a flange, m, extending some distance along its shank, which serves the twofold purpose of a guide for the bolt and astop to hold the bolt out of engagement with the upper sash, said flange working in a slot, n, extending radially from the opening in the plate F, through which the bolt passes; but when it is desired to hold the bolt from engaging with the upper sash the bolt is pulled out a suflicient distance to enable it tobe turned so that the outer extremity of the ange will rest on the plate. By pulling down on the cord a, after the sash has been lowered its greatest extent, the sash B may be raised to any height and held at that point by the cam D,which is caused torrmly press the cord against the friction-roller dand wedge the cord between the roller and face of the cam, the weight of the upper sash having a tendency to draw on the cord, which will cause it to be held by the cam with increased friction, and consequently` still firmer. The lower sash can be also raised and held suspended at any desired height in the same manner, either independent of the upper sash or the two sashes raised together, so that the window will be open at both top and bottom,

thereby providing avery simple and effective means for operating the sashes, and holding them opened or securely locked in a closed position, as found preferable.
