MAIL-BAG CORD FASTENER AND LABEL HOLDER COMBINED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,799,.dated March 11, 1884. Application filed December 26, 1883. (So model.)

T0 at whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, HUGH EUGENE LUNDY and CHARLES 'LEo LUNDY, citizens of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mail-Bag-Oord Fasteners and Mail-Bag-Label Holders combined, of which the following is a'specification.

Our invention relates to the combination, in the same device, of a mail-bag cord fastener and a label holder; and the object of our invention is to combine in the same device a mail-bag-cord fastener and a mail-bag label holder.

(t represents the box-frame of the device for supporting and protecting the mechanism of the fastener. Holes are made in the ends of the box a, and the cord ends pass through the entire length of the ,box. A shaft, 1, is fixed at its ends in the sidewalls of the boxframe, and carries two (2) similar clutches. The lower ends of said clutches have an eccentric outline, and are serrated or notched, as shown, and said clutches have upward-projecting arms, which pass through slots 4 in the top side of the front end of the box. The cord end passesalong the bottom of the box, and is secured by means of the said clutch, which acts as a heldfast, catch, or grip, since the said clutch presses the cord against the bottom of the box, andhas a serrated or notched and an eccentric bearing-surface, and hence it prevents the cord from slipping. A partitionplate, 15,/is placed betweenthe clutches 3 on the shaft 1, and lieeps the cordsiapart. WVhen the clutch-arm is moved forward, its lowerserrated or notched end' moves away from the bottom of the boxand loosens the cord. WVhen the clutch-arm is moved from the front end, the lower end of the clutch approaches the bottom of the box and clutches, grasps, or catches the cord and binds it fast. A pin, 2, placed parallel with the shaft 1, passes throhgh the middle of the box, and is secured in its side walls, as by riveting. Around this pin 2 a wire spring, 5 6, is coiled. The springbranch 5 extends forward, and its front end catches in a notch in the back side of the clutch 3. The other end, 6, of the spring-wire extends away from the pinand bears against the inside of the box; but it might be secured by passing through ahole in the pin 2. An equivalent spring is onewhere there are two branches, 5, and two branches, 6, as shown in Fig. 3, the whole spring being made of one piece of wire, and the outer ends of the branches 5 or the branches 6 being united by a'bend in the wire. The said spring 5 6 enables the clutch 3 to grasp and secure the cord.

The arms of the clutches 8, which project above the box, are manipulated by the thumb when it is desired to adjust or loosen the cord ends. The box-frame is made of two similar parts, as seen in Figs. 3,4, 5, and 6, having their corresponding edges adjoining,and being connected and secured by means of rivets 11, which extend across the box and are'riveted on the outside of the box. The rivets have shoulders for hearing against the insides of the box-walls, and hence stay the walls as well as bind them together. The label-holder is fastened to the side of the fastener-box, and the same rivets, 11, which fasten the two parts of the box-frame of the fastener together also secure the parts of the label-holder together and to the side of the fastener. The labels in use by the post-office department at present consist of pieces of pasteboard or card-board of rectangular shape, on which the mailing instructions are printed. The label-holder is shown designed for use with such a label.

A piece of sheet metal, 7, slightly thicker than the label pasteboard and as large as the side of the boxfr'ame of the fastener, is cut out in the'iniddle and at one end, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 and in Fig. 8, the rectangular portion cutout being slightly wider than the width of the label; and this C-shaped piece 7 is placed against the side of the fastener-box, with its outer edges coincident with the edges of the latter. piece, 8, (shown in Figs. 1 and 9,) of the same size, has a rectangular piece cut out of its middle also; but the part cut out is somewhat smaller than the rectangular dimensions of the label, so that the edges of the piece 8, surrounding the opening cut in it, project a little over the edges of the opening made in the piece 7. The opening cut in this piece 8 does not extend to the end, as in the piece 7. These two pieces are held in place and secured to the :tastenerbox by means of the rivets 11. The pasteboard label is inserted endwise at the back end of the device into the opening cut in the middle and end of the piece 7 and its edges are guided by the side edges of the said opeir ing in the piece '7 and by the projecting edges.

The middle rivet-pin, 2, is so located that its ends will come in the center of the sides of the fastener-box, and that the rivet-head 10 on the label side will be in the center of the label-receptacle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. This said rivet-head 10 is designed to project above the back surface of the label-receptacle, and to be spread out and rounded up, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so that when a label is inserted into the said receptacle the pasteboard will be pressed outward against the inner overlapping edges of the ex terior piece, 8, and that the said rivet-head will thus bind the pasteboard and hold it securely in place.

The outside of the rivet-hole in the fastener-box wall, which forms the back of the labelreceptacle, may be countersunk, and a shallow hole may be bored or drilled concentric with the said rivet-hole, so that the bearing surface of the said rivet-head 10 may be sunk into the fastener-b0x wall and not catch the end of the pasteboard label. The opening in the piece 8 permits of the printed instructions on the label being easily seen.

\Vhen the fastener -box is made of sheet metal, it may be made in halves, as shown in the figures; or three sides and the two ends of the fastener-box may be made of one piece of sheet metal and the otherside of another piece; and the base-plate of the label-holder may be placed against the latter or the opposite side; or the latter or the opposite side may consti tute the base-plate of the label-holder. The said fastener-box could also be cast malleable.

Fig. 7 shows a piece of sheet metal cut out so as to form one side, one-half of thetop, one- .half oft-he bottom, and one-half of each end.

The parts without the end dotted lines 0 0 are bent up at right angles to the side a, and the parts without the side dotted lines 0 0 are bent up at right angles to the side a and against the edges of the end pieces, so as to make nice corners. These corners may be soldered together; but this may not be necessary. These pieces can best be cut and bent by machinery. The holes 12 and 13 are cut in the ends, and a gap, 4, is cut in the front end ofthe top side Onehole,

12, only may be cut in the front end of the box; but two 2) holes are made in the back end, because the cord ends, being connected at their extremities, cannot then be pulled into the box, but will be arrested by the partition between the said two (2) holes.

We do not claim as our invention the fast ener mechanism, and consisting of the serrated or notched eccentric clutches 3, provided with thumb-arms projecting through a slot 01- slots, 4, in the fastener-box, the shafts or pins 1 and 2, supported at their ends in the i'astenenbox, the partition-plate 15, the wire spring coiled around the pin 2, and having abraneh, 6, held against the wall of the fastener-box, and a branch, 5, acting upon. the clutch 3, and where the cord passes between the lower serrated or notched end of the clutch 3 and the wall of the fastener-box; nor a fastener-box made in halves and joined along a longitudinal plane through the center of the box and cutting the pins 1 and 2, and the rivets, which hold the two parts of the box together, and having a slot or slots for the thumb-arms of the clutches 3, and a hole for the entrance and one for the exit of the cord ends; nor the combination of the said parts of the mechanism alone; nor the combination of the said mechanism with a fastener-box constructed only with reference to supporting and incasing the said mechanism but \Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The label-holder consisting of a baseplate, the plate 7, cut out in the middle and at one end, and the outer or retaining plate, 8, cut out in the middle only, in combination with a rivet placed through said base-plate, and having its head projecting into the labelreceptacle for the purpose of binding the label in place, and the said plates being secured together, as by means of rivets.

2. The combination, with an oblong boxframe for incasing and supporting the cordiastener mechanism, of a label-holder consisting of the said box side, a C-shaped plate, 7, a retaining-plate, 8, provided with an opening in its middle, and a rivet passing through the middle of the first or base plate, and provided with a projecting head, 10, for binding and securing the label in place between the side branches of the piece 7 and the base-plate and retaining-plate The combination of the spring-supporting and label-binding rivet-pin 2 with the spring 5 6, and with the mechanism incasing and supporting box-frame, and with the base plate and the plates 7 and 8, forming the label-receptacle, all having the construction, relation, and functions set forth.
