UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK S. DELLENBAUGH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED RESERVOIR AND PALETTE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,591, dated March 4, 1884.
' Application filed December 6, 1883. (No model.)
. To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it" known that I, F. S. DELLENBAUGH, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Reservoir and Palette; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to-an improved method of supplying anartists palette with pigments; and it consists in providing a palette with one or'more reservoirs attached in a convenient manner, which reservoirs are so constructed that the painter may at all times have a sufficient and fresh supply of pigments on the palette, while at thesame time there is no great waste in consequence of the pigments drying on the board, as in the method now in practice, where the pigments are placed directly upon it. These objects I attain by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, inwhich Figure 1 represents a sectional view of the reservoirand the part of the palette to which it is attached. Fig. 2 shows a palette with the-intended position of the reservoirs A upon it, and Fig. 3 is a side view of a reservoir, showing the pigment at 3 In Fig. 1, the letter A indicates the reservoir, which consists of'a hollow cylinder of tin or other suitable material, of any required method, and B is a screw playing through D I at the center and attached to the plunger F, which may be made with or without packing.
P is a suitable head on the screw B, for the purpose of turning it conveniently and easily with the finger. When the screw B is turned,
it compels the close-fitting piston or plunger to travel down or up.
It will be seen from the above description that if thecap D be removed the screw B and the piston F will be lifted out with it, permitting the reservoir A to be filled with a pigment from the common tubes of commerce, or from any other source of supply. The cap D, with the screw B and piston F, being then lreplacedflt is only necessary to turn the screw worthless by being mixed with dust and by drying, as is the case with the ordinary palette, and in case he expels more than he needs, the extra quantity can easily be replaced in the reservoir by means of a palette knife, and thus preserved, instead of being left to dry and waste on the palette.
It is evident that the object that I have in View, and which has been distinctly stated, may be effected by various modifications, without,
however, departing from the spirit of my invention.
WVhat I therefore claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with an artists palette, of one or more reservoirs adapted to contain pigments and permit the exit of the same upon the palette in quantities desired by the artist, substantially by means herein described.
2-. The combination, with an artists' palette, of an adjustable reservoir formed with an orifice at or near its base, and provided with means for forcing the pigment contained within said reservoir (or reservoirs) upon the palette in such quantity only as desired by the artist, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with an artists pal- FREDERICK S. DELLENBAUGH.
