\VILLIAM HELLBARDT, OF ROSOHENEN, AND OSCAR GERHARDT, OF OBERSCHONVEIDE, GERMANY.
APPARATUS FOR MARKING CATTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,026, dated May 2, 1899.
Application filed December 28,1898. erial No. 700,512. (No model f0 all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that we, WILLIAM HELLBARDT, residing at Roschenen ,near'Schippenbeil, and OSCAR GERHARDT, residing at Oberschonweide, near Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, citizens of the Kingdom of Prussia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for-Marking Cattle, (for which we have filed a patent application in Germany, dated May 10, 1898,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for shearing a mark into the hair of cattle and marking the shorn parts with paint. It is especially designed for the use of buyers on the markets of cattle, and therefore is easy to handle and easy to transport.
I11 the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the apparatus as seen from the top. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through same on line a: a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the circular comb resting immediately on the stencil-plate provided with a reservoir for the paint. The left part of the comb is broken away. Fig. 4: is a cut through same on line 3 y of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a top view and a cut on line u u of the knife in form ofa sector sliding over the circular comb. Fig. 6 isa horizontal cut through Fig. 2 on line 2 2, showing the circular comb, Fig. 3, resting on thestencil-plate. Theformerispartlybroken away.
A ring A, made of brass or any suitable material, is closed on one side by a stencilplate a, made of a thin sheet of metal. On the inner side of said stencil-plate rests a circular comb b, which at its center has an axis f. The radial teeth of the former are of triangular profile and turn the i1 flat side upward. On one side the area'of the comb is not interrupted, and here it bears a reservoir 0 for the paint. The bottom of said reservoir is provided with a radial slot d, widening at e, where it rests on the stencil-plate. Athin sheet of felt is inserted into the slot. The paint contained in the reservoir trickles through the felt, which serves as a brush. In the top of the reservoir is an opening for introducing the paint, which is closed bya screw s. The circular comb is connected to the axis f, which bears at its end a latch g. A spring 9 bears against the rounded end of the latch and by its frictional contact serves to hold it in any position to which it may be adjusted. A hollow axis his put overf. The same has at its upper end a spit 2' and at the other one a comb 7a, which has the form of a sector. The teeth of this comb also have triangular profile; but they turn their flat side toward the comb b. A springp, bearing with its upper end against the case A of the apparatus, presses comb 7; on comb Z).
The whole apparatus is covered by a cap A, fixed to the ring A by means of a pin e11- gaging slots in A or in other suitable manner. On the top of the case there is arranged a block Z and on the spit a second one Z. According as the latch g engages with the one or the other, the comb moves alone or together with comb b. Two stops on and m on the top of the case limit the motion of 2'.
It is evident that the stencil-plate cannot be provided with apertures in the space comprised between the two stops m and m, for this place will not be dyed. Just below the place occupied by the reservoir 0 there is a place which will not be shorn in moving the comb it. The stencil has therefore no perforations in this place.
In use the apparatus is pressed slightly against the animal to be signed. In giving it a slight turning to-and-fro motion the hair of the animal penetrates through the apertures of the stencil and comb b, which is rendered immovable by engaging the latch g to the block Z. On turning the spit '5 comb 7o slides over the surface of comb b and by means of the sharp edges of the triangular teeth acts in the way of a pair of scissors. Then the latch is engaged to the other block, Z, and by moving now the handle the shorn parts are painted. In order to avoid confounding the positions for shearing and paint ing with each other, the blocks Z and Z are marked, respectively, with the letters S (shearing) and P, (painting) The apparatus may of course be built in different sizes, the smallest of which may be easily put into the pocket.
The hair which is clipped off will be carried around by the simultaneous rotation of both combs out of the path of the marker when the latter is brought into action and may be afterward removed by separating the cap and ring.
\Vhat we claim is 1. An animal-marking apparatus comprising a casing having a stencil-plate on the lower side thereof, avertical comb journaled within the casing above the stencil, a color holding and feeding reservoir carried by said comb, a second comb rotatably mounted above the said first comb, said two combs together forming a clipping means, means for holding one comb stationary while the other is rotated, and means for effecting the simultaneous rotation of both combs, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus for marking cattle the combination, with a ring, closed on one side by a stencil-plate and on the other by a cap, of a circular comb, provided with a vertical shaft resting on said stencil-plate, said comb bearing on one side a reservoir for holding paint and means for distributingit, the teeth of said comb each having a triangular section with the apex toward the stencil-plate; the shaft of said comb being provided at its upper end with a latch, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In an apparatus for marking cattle the combination with a ring, a stencil-plate, a cap and a circular comb, of a second comb, having the form of a sector, each of its teeth being of triangular section, with the flat side toward the circular comb, the former being solidly connected to a hollow axle, passed over the axle of the circular comb; the hollow axle having at its upper end a spit, provided with a block for engaging the latch; a spring passed over the hollow axle and bearing with its upper end against the cap pressing the sector against the circular comb, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
