Description

3o ject-ing ledge.
` UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
THOMAS MCGRORY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
l.LOCK WIRE iNseLAToE.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 293,901, dated February 19, 1884.
Application filed December 14, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, 2S may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS MCGRORY, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loek IV ire Insulators, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to insulators-for telegraph-wires; and the object I have in view is to form an insulator into which the wire may be passed and held securely by the binding of the same, and without wrapping, as is usually the case.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure l represents a front view, Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of my improved insulator.
In the gures, A represents the body oi' the insulatoigwhich is made of glass and provided with an opening, D, at its bottom, by means of which it can be secured upon suitable pins upon the cross-bars of telegraph-poles. In one side of this body is formed a V-shaped slot or opening, into which the wire is inserted when to be connected to it.
C represents this opening.
B represents a downwardly-inclined pro- The upper end of this ledge terminates at the lower edge of the mouth of the opening G. The outer surface of the ledge is a tapering oval in shape, and serves to guide the wire to its seat within the slot or opening in the body A. That portion of the body A which forms the lower wall of the opening O is provided at its inner end with a recess, e, large enough to form a resting-place for the wire.
Inthe upper wall of the opening C, and running from its outer ends inward and inclining upward, are two grooves, l d, into which the wire is also caught. The wine bears down (when in position) in the recess e and upward iii the grooves d d, being bent over the bridge a, thus having two upward bearings and one intermediate downward bearing, all in grooves. It is rmly and securely held in position after once it is forced into the opening C and back to these grooves. The inclined ledge readily guides the wire to the opening O and shapes it, or upon which it may be shaped, to fit said opening.
I am aware that a V-shaped opening is not new in insulators, hence I do not broadly claim such.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an insulator having in one side a V-shaped groove, O, an oval inclined ledge, B, a bridge, c, with recess e at its inner end, and the upwardly-projecting grooves l d at the ends of the opening C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth..
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS MCGRORY.
