INSULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,629, dated October 21, 1902.
Application filed March 6, 1902.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLAYTON HoBERT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city and county of Philadelphia, lState of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Insulators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in insulators for electric wires; and the object of my invention is to furnish an improved means for securingthe wire to the insulator without the use of the usual tying-wires.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of an insulator embodying my improved means for carrying and for locking the wire in place; Fig. 2, a front elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a front elevation of Fig. l, the wire and locking device being removed; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the locking device.

c represents the wires to be carried and insulated by the insulator, and d the device for locking the wire in the slot b. The throat e of the slot b is just wide enough to permit the Wire c to pass through it, and the bottom of the slot is preferably furnished with a groove f, of less diameter than the wire c, across the top of which the wire rests,althou gh it will be understood that this groove may be done away with, if desired. The Wire having been placed in the slot the keeper el, which Serial No. 96,937. (No model.)
consists,preferably, of a tapered plug of wood, rubber, or other suitable material, preferably circular in cross-section, but not necessarily of this form, is forced in the slot over the wire and engages the top of the slot and the top of the wire and securely holds the latter in place. The keeper, if made of wood, is preferably coated with oil or paran to protect it from dampness.
The ends of the slot b are preferably flared, as shown, to facilitate the entrance of the keeper to give the Wire play and to give good drainage.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An insulator furnished upon its side or sides with a slot adapted to receive a Wire, the bottom of said slot being furnished with a groove of less width than the diameter of the Wire.
2. An insulator furnished upon its side or sides with a slot adapted to receive a wire, the bottom of said slot being furnished with a groove of less diameter than the wire, the ends of said slot flaring outwardly.
3. In combination, an insulator furnished upon its side or sides with a slot adapted to receive a wire, the bottom of said slot being of less width than the diameter of the wire, and a keeper of circular cross-section adapted to enter said slot above said wire to force said wire against the lower side of said slot.
