Beit knownl that I, STEPHEN A'. MARKER,

a citizen of the United States, residing at New,

ark, in the county of 'Essex and State of New Jcrsey,-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons for Driving-Heins; and do hereby declare that'the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of referencemarked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of myimproved button for driving-reins in position for use; Fig. 2, a similar view, showing the button detached from the rein; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the same; `and Fig. 4, a detail view of the bent wire or brace, showing its ends connected.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements on my button for driving-reins, patented April 18, 1882, and numbered 256, 714; audit consists in providing said button with a slit -or opening extending from the transverse slot or rein-opening to the periphery, which admits of the button being connected to or detached from the rein at any point along the length thereof, thus obviating the necessity of having to put this button on said rein at its end and secure the proper adjustment by sliding to or from said end, as is now the case, and which, owing to the fact that the rein from various'causes is frequently enlarged or bulged out at one place and another, is often difficult and at times impossible to accomplish with buttons similar tothe one described in my former patent.

The invention further consists in embedding or interposing between the sides of the button a bent wire or casting, for the purpose of strengthening and imparting increased rigidity to said button, while at the same time this bent wire or casting, when found desirable,

forms a pivot for one end of a tongue which secures the button in place upon the rein, and abearing for the other or free end of such tongue, so as to prevent it from working, or

being jammed down so far in the material composing the button as to render it difficult to raise when desired to connect or disconnect said button andrein.

In the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, A represents my improved rein-button, 'made preferably of rubber, and having theusual transverse slot or opening a, through which passes the rein B.

lExtending from the transverse slot or reinopening a to the periphery of the button is a slit or opening, b, its purpose being to ad'- mit of the attaching or detaching of said button to or from the rein at any point along the length thereof, thereby obviating the necessity of putting this button on at the end of a rein and sliding itl along the same to secure the proper adjustment, such an operation being not only awkward and tedious, but at times very difficult or impossible to accomplish.

Embedded or `interposed between the sides of the button A is a bent wi're or brace, C, for the purpose of strengthening and increasing the rigidity of said button; and, if desired, a tongue, c, may be pivotally connected to one portion of this bent wire or brace, so that its free end will have a bearing on another portionthereof, to prevent its working or being jammed down in the material composing the button, so as to render it difficult to raise when found necessary, in connecting or disconnect- .ing the rein and button, said tongue, when connected to the button, forming a device to secure the same to the rein.

To prevent lateral motion of the button at the slit or opening b, I prefer to have the ends of the bent wire or brace C so formed as to engage one another, thus providing a fastening device w-hen the rein is placed in the transverse slot or opening c. Any suitable means may be employed to accomplish this result, either by having one endvof the bent wire or brace so fashioned as to form an eye for the reception of the other end, as shown by Fig. 4, or aV short tube may be secured to one end to form a socket for the reception of the other, any other means for the same purpose being equally as good, the simplicity and cost of manufacture, as well as the security withwhich these ends may be held, being the important features of such a fastening device.

To connect or withdraw the rein from the button,it is only necessary to separate the ends ICO of that portion of the button through which v from being accidentally disconnected,and thus l from said opening to the periphery of the butretain the button thereon.

I'Iaving vnow fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A driving-rein button having a transverse slot or opening through it for the reception of the rein, and provided with a self- -elosing slit or opening extending from said transverse slot or rein-opening to the periphery of the button, in combination with a device for securing said button to the rein, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. A driving-rein button having interposed or embedded between its sides a bent wire or brace, substantiallyas and for the purpose described.

3. A drivingrein button having a transverse opening through it for the reception of the rein' or strap thereof, a slit extending ton7 and a tongue suitably connected directly thereto, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

The combination of a drivingrein button having a transverse slot or opening for the reception of the rein, and a slit or opening extending from said transverse slot or reinopening to the periphery of the button, with a bent Wire or brace interposed or embedded between the sides of said button, and a` fastening device for securing the rein thereto, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
