CHECKREIN ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 493,515, dated March 14, 1893.
Application led December 14, 1892. Serial No. 455.155. (No model.)

Beit known that I, JOSHUA PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danielsonville, in the county of I/Vindhani and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checkrein Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to theletters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide an attachment to check-reins whereby the rein can be detached and removed from the cheek-hook in the harness-saddle while the driver remains in the vehicle, and can be again re-checked or connected to the check hook without the necessity of the driver removing from his seat in the vehicle.
The above objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a perspective view showing a harness-saddle, the check-rein connected to the hook thereof, and my improved attachment connected to the check-rein. Fig. 2 a perspective View of the attachment on an enlarged scale showing the check-rein in dotted lines. Figs. 3 and 4 end views of the attachment in different positions.
In the accompanying drawings A represents a harness-saddle of the usual construction and provided with the check-hook a to which is connected the check-rein B, these parts being of the ordinary construction and are shown to more clearly illustrate the application of my invention thereto.
The device which constitutes my invention is shown at C and consists of a Hat-sided sleeve or slide constructed of metal or any other suitable material found most preferable. This sleeve or slide is preferably rectangular in shape and may be connected to the checkrein B in any preferred or well known man ner, but I have shown it in the form of a sleeve or in other words hollow so as to allow the check-rein to pass through it and be connected rigidly thereto or adapted to slide on said check-rein.
The attachment C is provided at one end with a loop b or any other suitable means for connecting thereto a suitable strap or cord D which extends within reach of the driver upon the seat in the vehicle so that the strap or cord may be used for unchecking or recheeking the rein B as circumstances require. When the driver pulls on the strap or cord D, the attachment C will be brought to the position shown in Fig. 3 when it will easily pass under and out of the check-hook and thus enabling the check-rein to be disconnected from the check-hook. When it is desired to replace the check-rein in the hook, the driver remaining in his vehicle, again pulls the strap or cord sufficiently to bring the attachment C just back of the check-hook and the attachment being in a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 4, easily slides or passes under the check-hook and the checkrein is thus replaced and again brought in engagement therewith.
It is preferable that the attachment be made to slide on the check-rein rather than be stationary thereon, but I do not wish to be confined thereto as I reserve the right to connect it to the rein in any manner desired.
With the attachment above described the driver while remaining in his vehicle can relieve the horse from the hard strain of the check-rein when ascending steep hills, and also allow the horse to drink at the roadway water-troughs and streams of water inthe course of the drive, when perhaps he might not if required to alight from his vehicle into muddy and dusty roads to uncheck and recheck the checkrein.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A device for checking and unchecking horses, consisting of a rectangular sleeve or slide adapted to be attached to the check rein, a loop attached to the slide or sleeve, and a cord or strap connected to the loop and passed back to the driver for operation, substantially as and for the purpose described.
