Such engagement with the workpiece is only brought about by the in-feed using the handwheel 17.
  • the hydraulic fluid supplied by the pump 39 When the hydraulic fluid supplied by the pump 39 is then forced through the conduit 36 below the piston 34, the grinding wheel head stock 6 is moved in the direction toward the work piece 2. This movement is effected by movement of the rack 31 to rotate the pinion Z2 and the energized clutch 19 and cause movement of the grinding wheel 1 in an amount determined by the stops 24 and 25.
  • the amount of movement of feed of the grinding wheel 1 depends on the stroke of the piston 34, and this is limited by movement, between the stationary abutment 24 and the adjustable abutment 25, of the arm 23, which is affixed to the shaft 21.
  • the arm 23 In, the starting position of the piston 34, which is indicated by the fully drawn lines, the arm 23 is abutting the stop 24.
  • the piston When the piston is moved upwardly, by the hydraulic fluid, into the upper terminal position, it can move an amount limited by the movement of the arm 23 against the adjustable stop 25.
  • the adjustable stop 25 is set precisely by the control knob 29 to limit the feeding of the grinding wheel in proportion to the amount of dressing. This permits compensation of the feeding for an amount equivalent to the trimming down of the grinding wheel 1 by the dressing process.
  • Circuit 59 of the electromagnetic clutch 19 is thereby opened by contact 54 and circuit 60 and clutch 14'is again closed by contact 54 The device is therefore ready for manual adjustment by the wheel 17 and the control drive is disconnected from the screw spindle 7.

  • the extent of forward feeding of the grinding wheel during each grinding path may be accurately controlled within limits as determined by the setting of the very accurate gauge 30.
  • a grinding machine including a rotating grinding wheel, means for moving said grinding toward and away from a workpiece, feed means connected to said grinding wheel moving means, compensating means connected to said grinding wheel moving means to actuate the latter and shift said grinding wheel independently of said feed means, and means to control said compensating means including adjustable limiting means to limit the extent of operation of said compensating means.
  • An automatic feeding device according to claim 1 wherein said limiting means includes a fixed stop and a finely adjustable movable stop.
  • said compensating means includes a control rod
  • said control means includes a fixed stop, a movable stop, a movable arm, means connecting said control rod and said grinding wheel moving means to move said grinding Wheel, and means connecting said control rod and said movable arm to move said movable arm between said stops, whereby to limit the movement of said control rod by movement of said arm between said stops.
  • An automatic feeding device including a piston at one end of said control rod, a cylinder in which said piston is movable, means to move said piston to actuate said grinding wheel moving means as determined by the movement of said arm against said movable stop, and means thereafter efiective to move said piston in the opposite direction.
  • said means for moving said piston in the opposite direction includes means for building up pressure in said cylinder beneath said piston, and means responsive to said pressure increase beneath said piston to direct said pressure means against the top of said piston.
  • a grinding machine including means for moving a grinding device toward and away from a workpiece, the improvement comprising separate feed means connected to said grinding device movement means, compensating means connected to said grinding device movement means to move the latter in proportion to movement of said compensating means, means to adjust said compensating means, and a disengageable first clutch connected to said compensating means and said grinding device moving means.
  • An automatic feeding device including means for automatically disengaging said clutch after said adjustable means is effective to stop the movement of said reciprocable control member.
  • said means to adjust said compensating means includes a calibrated control dial connected to said compensating means.
  • said adjustment means includes a reciprocatable control member, a rotating arm connected to said reciprocatable control member for rotation thereby, a fixed stop arranged to limit motion of said arm in one direction, a movable stop to limit movement of said arm in the other direction, a piston at one end of said control member, a cylinder in which said piston is movable, means to move said piston to a limit position at which said control member moves said rotating arm against said movable stop, means thereafter effective to move said piston in the opposite direction, said means for moving said piston downwardly including means for building up pressure in said cylinder beneath said piston, and means responsive to said pressure increase beneath said piston to cause said pressure means to be directed against the top of said piston, said pressure responsive means including a pressure switch arranged to de-energize an electrical circuit holding said first disengageable clutch in an engaged position.
  • said pressure responsive means includes a second pressure switch arranged to effect energization of said second disengageable clutch to hold said clutch in an engaged position.
  • said adjustment means includes a reciprocable control memher, a rotating arm connected to said reciprocable control member for rotation thereby, a fixed stop arranged to limit motion of said arm in one direction and a movable stop to limit movement of said arm in the other direction.
  • An apparatus including a piston at one end of said control rod, a cylinder in which said piston is movable, means to move said piston to its iimit position at which said control member moves said rotating arm against said movable stop, and means thereafter effective to move said piston in the opposite direction.
  • said means for moving said piston downwardly includes means for building up pressure in said cylinder beneath said piston, and means responsive to said pressure increase beneath said piston to cause said pressure means to be directed against the top of said piston.
  • said pressure responsive means includes a pressure switch arranged to deenergize an electrical circuit holding said first disengageable clutch in an engaged position.
  • said pressure responsive means includes at least two pressure switches, one responsive to the pressure above said piston and the other responsive to the pressure below said piston and one efiective to energize said first disengageable clutch and the other eifective to energize said second disengageable clutch.
  • An apparatus including pressure control valves to regulate the pressure above and below said pistons and means for altering the position of said pressure control valve to change the pressure conditions below and above said piston.
