(ModeL) I A. A, P 0TTER TACK HAMMER AND TACK HOLDER.

ADDISON A. POTTER, on sonTH OTSELIO, NEW YORK.
T'ACK-HAMMER A ND TACK-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,516, dated. February 12, 1884,
7 Application filed September 10, 1883. (Model) To all whom it may concern/.-
Be itknown that I, Anmson A. POTTER, of South Otselic, in the county of Chenango, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tack- Hammers and Tack-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making apart of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my device as arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a'longitndinal section of the hammer upon line at w oflFig. 1,
wardthrough the said narrow part.
and Fig. 3 is a cros'ssection of the handle upon line z of said figure.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to furnish a cheap and convenient means whereby tacks may be stored before using, and each tack may be held upon or withinthe hammer-face while being driven 5 and to this end said invention consists, principally, in the means employed for storing the tacks in convenient position for use, substantially as hereinafter specified.
It consists, further, in the means employed for holding a tack upon the face of the hammer while being driven, substantially as hereinafter shown.
In the carrying out of my invention one or more longitudinal grooves, mare formed in the handle A of my hammer B, which grooves have a T shape in crosssection, and extend from said hammer-to a point near the opposite end of said handle, and at each end are provided with an enlargement, a, that in diameter equals the width of the undercut portion. The outer narrow portion of each to permit of the introduction of tacks into the same with their heads contained within said undercut part and their bodies projecting out- The tacks G are introduced into the groove a through the enlargement a at its outer end,
and are prevented from falling out of the ber band, E, which encircles the handle A where it enters the hammer B, and covers the enlargement a at such point. A second rubber band, D, placed around said handle. and pressed downward against the outermost tack, prevents said tacks from moving toward and falling out of the upper end of said groove. The tacks 0 thus confined within the groove a may, one at a time, be easily removed therefrom by grasping the body of the lowermost tack with the thumb and forefinger and pressing the same toward the hammer B, and at the same time tilting the point of said tack toward said hammer, so as to release its head 0 from said groove.
Any desired number of grooves may be pro vided in the-handle, and, if desired, such difusual sizes of tacks to be accommodated.
In order that tacks may be held upon the face I) of the hammer B in position for driving, a fiat spring, F, is secured upon one side the end of the same. The outer or free end, f, of the spring F has a slight inward curve, and immediately adjacent thereto, within the face I), is formed a diagonally-arranged recess, b, which has its inner side undercut, as shown in F g. 2. Said undercut side is opposite to the inward-curved end f of said spring F, and in cross-section thespace thus inclosed has a dovetailed form, while in plan View said space has a wedge shape. If, now, the head 0 of the tack C is placed upon the bottom of the recess 1), with the body of said tack in a line with the axis of the hammer B, and is then moved toward the narrow est end of said recess, said head will be securely confined between the undercut side of the latter and the spring F, and will be held with equal firmness against the bottom of said recess, in which position, by one blow of said hammer, sa'idtack may be driven to place, and by such operation is instantly released from engagement therewith.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new lower end of said groove by means of a rubof said hammer, with its end in a line with 1. As an article of manufacture, a hammer ferences 111 size had as to enable any of thehaving its handle formed with one or more T- shaped grooves adapted to receive and hold the head portions of a number of tacks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth:
bination with the spring F, having an inwardcurving outer end, f, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set myhand this 6th day of September, 1883. 1
ADDISON A. POTTER.
Vitnesses:
DEWITT ORUMB, LEWIS P. HUTTLESTEN.
