Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.I
`JAMES W. DEVLIN, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-VISES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 111,618, dated February 7, 1871.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Beit known that I, J AMES W. DEVLIN, ofYonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of NewYork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Vises and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
The gure is a side view of my improved vise, partly in section, to show the construction.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved hand-vise which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use, being so constructed as to enable long slender articles to be held in a line with the axis of the tool; and it consists in the tool constructed as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the handle, which may be made of wood or iron. B is a cone, which, when the handle A is made of metal, is formed upon the forward end of said handle, and when the handle A is made of wood is formed upon the forward end of a socket inserted in and secured to the forward end of said handle.
The cone B, or cone and socket, is hollow, and has a screw-thread cut into its inner surface, into which is screwed a screw, C, having` a cross-head or bar, D, formed upon or securely and rigidly attached to its outer end. The ends of the cross-head Dare slotted to receive the levers E, upon the forward ends of which are formed the jaws of the vise. The rear ends of the lever-jaws E rest against the inclined sides of the cone B, as shown in the figure.
By this construction, by turning the screw C inward the inner ends of the lever-jaws E will slide up the inclined sides of the cone B, which will force the outer ends or jaws of said levers toward each other to grasp the article to be held.
As the screw C is turned out the inner ends of the levers move toward the apex of the cone B, allowing the outer ends of the jaws of the levers E to be spreadl apart to release the article held, or to adjust the tool for holding a larger article.
F are two springs, the inner ends of which are secured to the bar or cross-head D, and the outer ends of which press against the inner surfaces of the outer part of the lever-jaws E, to force said jaws apart as screw C is turned out, and to hold the inner ends of the said lever-jaws E always pressed against the sides l of the cone B.
The screw C and handle A are perforated longitudinally, as shown in the figure, so that when long slender articles are to be held they may be passed through the said hole so that they may be held in a line with the axis of the tool, enabling the workman to do his work much more conveniently and accurately.
Havingthus described my invention, I clailn as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved hand-vise consisting of the hollow handle A, cone B, hollow screw C, cross-head D, lever-jaws E, and springs F. said parts being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
' JAMES IV. DEVLlN.
