Be it known that I, J OHN EBBERT, of Rockaway Beach, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spike-Extractor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. This invention relates to certain improvements in my new and improved spike-extractor shown and described in Letters Patent No. 290,011, which were granted to me December 11, 188.3; and the invention consists of the combinations and arrangements of parts substantially as hereinafter described the spike has been fully drawn. 'Fig. 2 is a sectional front elevation of the claw and camring removed from the other parts of the device. Fig. 3 is afront elevationof a modified form of claw, and Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the cam-ring.
The sectors a b are toothed, and linked together by the plates 6, and secured upon the support is Z in the same manner as shown and described in my above mentioned patent. The sector a, instead of being formed with a lever or handle, as in my said patent, is formed with the socket a, for receiving the separate lever g, for rocking the sector I), for drawing the spike.

This bolt h is screw-threaded at its lower end, and is hinged at its upper end to the angleof the sector a by the pin f The claws .h h are attached to the bolt h by the internally-screw-threaded sleeve j, with the head of which the claws are formed, or to which head they are rigidly secured or pivoted. When the claws h are pivoted to the head of the sleeve j, they are by preference. each formed with the upwardly and outwardly projecting stems h, as shown in Fig. 2. With this form of claw I shall employ the cam-ring h, formed with the eccentric or cam grooves hh, and placed upon and adapted tobe turned upon the sleeve 9' and upper ends of the stems h for opening and closing the claws, and for locking the claws in closed position upon thespike or other object to be drawn;
and, by preference, the said camring is is formed with the lugs h h, by which the ring may easily be turned with the hand for opening or closing the claws, and the ring is held in place upon the sleeve 9' by means of the plate or nut k screwed upon the screw-threadedportion of the connecting-bolt h, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The claws h are so .arranged with the stems h and cam-ring k that by turning the ring to the left the upper ends of the stems h will be drawn toward each other, thus opening the claws, so that they may be passed directly down over the head of the spike, if found necessary; and by turning the said cam-ring to the right the stems h will, forced away from each other, cause the claws to grasp and firmly hold' the spike or whatever may be placed between them; and by employing the sleeve )7 and bolt h the claws may be easily adjusted by turning the sleeve up or down upon the bolt h, for adapting the extractor to its work-as, for example, to railroad-rails of different heights; and by forming the sector a with the socket a the extractor is adapted to be used with a separate handle, which may be removed and replaced at pleasure, making the tool more convenient than when made with a rigid handle. Besides, the socket a renders the, tool stronger and more durable and cheaper to make than when made with a rigid handle. 1
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the sleeve, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
