SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,421, dated February 12, 1884.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ADAM COFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warsaw, in the county of Ooshocton and State of Ohio,

have invented certain new and useful Improvethe accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved harnessloop, by which the leather loops in which it is placed will sustain no wear of the trace-chain, tug, belly-band,-or other strap or chain passing through it; also, to render useless the ordinary slide or guard crossloop.

The invention consists in aloop prepared of an oval or nearly oval for1n,(rather pearshaped,)'and made of suitable material, and having two transverse loops or keepers arranged at the upper end thereof, and so disposed that they will grasp or press the loops of the strap close together and prevent slipping, and thereby prevent unnecessary wear.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. of my improved loop, practically applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the loop on line 00 as, Fig. 3, the strap being removed. Fig. 3 is aside elevation, the strap being removed; and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line y y, Fig. 2, showing the strap in section applied thereto.

A is the loop, through which the trace, tug, belly-band, or other strap or chain is to be passed. It is made slightly convex in crosssection on the inner faces, so that the edges will not come in contact with the tug, strap, or chain passing through it. It is made concave on the outer faces, wherein the strap passing around it finds a lodgment, and wear on the outer face of the leather loop is materially reduced. It is rounded at both ends,

and made oblong or approximately oval, being wider at the lower end, so that straps of different widths maypass through it, and so that a chaincan go through this wider end. On the lower end I provide the transverse loop or keeper D, and at the upper end I provide the two transverse loops 0 O. The two loops 0 O are arranged with their upper edges close together, as shown, so that the contiguous ends of the strap B will be brought in contact immediately above and close to the rounded outer surface of the upper end of the loop A. When the strap is thus held, it cannot slip or move on the surface of the loop, nor can the loop turn or move in the strap. By this arrangement I obviate the objections which obtain'in loops of ordinary construction. necks, which are employed in some devices of this class, and with duplication of keepers arranged around the body of the loop. The up- .per end of the loop A is dished just below the space between the adjacent edges of the keepers O G, and thereby the strap is pressed in easy bends as it is carried up ward between the said keepers.

It will be seen that the strap B is in contact with the entire or nearly the entire outer surface of the loop, and is held in close contact therewith.

The lower loop, D, may be, if desired or preferred, made large enough so that an additional strap for any desired purpose could be put through it between it and the strap B. In the construction shown, the loop is provided with the side flanges, A, which protect the edges of the leather, and between these flanges the face of the loop is made concave, which causes the leather to fit more closely and be less liable to slip.

What I claim is A harness-loop, substantially as described, provided with the supporting strap-keepers O G on opposite sides, at the upper end of the loop, the inner edges of the keepers being close together, leaving a narrow opening in which the supporting-strap is clamped between the said keepers, as and for the purpose set forth.
