j C. MURDUGK.
PIRE ESCAPE BRACKET.
No. 293,191. 'Patented Feb. 5, V1884 WTNESSES ATTORNEYS.
' UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES MURDOCK, OF NEW ROCHELLE, NEW YORK.
FI RE-SCAPE BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming `part of `Letters Patent No. 293,191,` dated February 5, 1884. `Application `filed November `6, 1883. (No modeLl .To @ZZ whom t may concern.;
Be it known that I, OHARLEs MURDocK, of New Rochelle, inthe county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved `Iirefllscape Bracket, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My present invention relates to a bracket to V be attached to the window-casing or wall of a building and used in connection with my new and improved fireescape shown and described in Letters Patent granted to Ine July 3l, 1883, andnuinbered 282, 212, and the present invention consists in certain details of construction, as willbe hei e` nafter fully described, and speciand lower section of the bracket.
A represents :my improved bracket. It is composed of the main sections a b, hinged together, and the short plate d, to which the section a is"4 hinged, and by which the bracket is secured to the window-casing B by the bolt C and nut D. The section b is formed near its upper end with the eye f, and in the center it is bent outward and recessed, as shown at g, to clear the step h and bolt E, and at the lower end`it is beveled off, asshown' at i i, to form the projection t, which fits between the prongs j j, formedat the upperend of the steph when the bracket is arrangedfor use for securely -holding the lower end of the section b against all lateral movement. The step his bolted in proper position to the window-casing B by the said bolt E and the nut F, andA at its upper end the step his beveled inward and down- Ward, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, Vfor receiving and securely holding the lower end of the section b upon the step, the position it` will occupy'when the bracket is arranged for` use. Vhen section bis placed upon step h, its upper end will be carried away from the wall of the building, bringing the section a into horizontal position and the eye f into proper position for receiving the hook of the iire-escape pulley G, as shown in Fig. 1, thus holding the pulley the necessary distance from `the wall, to permit a person to descend by the esoape-rope Hv without coming in contact with the wall, but when the section b is thrown ofi' from the step h," the bracket will fold down close to the wall or window-casing, as shown in Fig. 3, where it will not in any manner disligure the wall of `the building.
' I am aware that folding bracketsare not broadly new, and I do not desire to claim such,
broadly, asV of my invention.
. Having thus described myinvention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isj r 1. A hre-escape bracket consisting of the securingplate d, to which is hinged the short section a, carrying the section b, formed with ,an eye at its upper end, angular bend or recess nearits middle portion, and a proj ection-on its free end for engaging the step It, bolted to the window-casing, substantially as set forth.
2. `In a folding bracket, the step h, beveled at its upper end, and formed with the inwardlybeveled projections j j, in combination with the section b, formed with the projection i, and
projections j j, whereby all lateral movement of the section b is prevented, substantially as set forth'.
3. In a folding bracket, the section b, bent in the center, as at g, to fold over the steph, substantially as herein shown and described.
CHARLES MURDOCK.
