UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFrcE.
JACOB RHULE, on rrrrsnnnc, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND oNsLow K. GARDNER, or sAME rLAoE.
CAR-DOOR FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,083, dated February 5, 1884. Application filed October 12, 1883. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAcoE RHULE, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Oar-Door Fastening, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in the combination, with a car-door, of a hasp having a hook end and a slot at the opposite end, which hasp is held on the door by passing its hook end through an eyebolt in the door-frame and passing a staple in the door through the slot in the opposite end of the hasp, whereupon a bolt or hasp of a padlock is passed through the staple on the door.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side View of a car provided with my improved car-door fastening. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same 011 the line a: m, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the eyebolt. 7
On the outside of the cardoor A a staple, B, is fastened, which is adapted to pass through a longitudinal slot, 0, in one end of a hasp, D, the opposite end of which is bent to fit against the rounded edge S of the door, and which bent end of the hasp terminates in a hook, E. The edge of the door-fra1ne F is provided with a recess, G. An eyebolt, H, passes through the door-frame at the recess G, and on the stem of the eyebolt a spiral spring, J, is coiled, which is held between a plate in a recess in the inside of the door post or frame, and a nut, K, on the end of the bolt, which spring draws the bolt-eye Hinto the recess G. A chain, L, is fastened to the car-door and to the hasp D.
A pin or bolt, M, is held by a chain, N, to the chain L. If the door is to be locked, the hook E is passed into the eye H, and the hasp D is pressed against the door with the curved edge S as a fulcrum, in such a manner that the staple B passes through the slot 0. The pin or bolt M or the hasp of a padlock is passed through the staple B, whereby the hasp is locked in place. The spring J draws the hooked end of the hasp toward the door-frame and into the recess G.
If desired, a plate, 0, may be secured on the curved edge S, to protect the same and guide the hasp.
A washer can be placed 011 the eyebolt at each end of the spiral spring, if desired.
. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a car-door lock, the con1bination,with
the hasp D, having a hookend, of the staple B on the door A, and the adjustable eyebolt H, held in the door-frame, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a car-door lock, the con1bination,with the hasp D, having a hook end, of the staple B on the car-door, and of the eyebolt H, providedwith a spring, J, for drawing the eye bolt inward, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a lock for sliding car-doors, the hasp D, having a hook end, in combination with the spring-eyebolt H on the car-door frame, provided with the collar and nut whereby the tension of spring J may be regulated, and the staple B, substantially as set forth.
J AOOB RHULE. XVitnesses:
