2 Ciaims. (Cl. 220-22) This invention relates to containers and, more particularly, to an improved tile box for storing photographic transparencies or slides and the like.

An object of the invention is to overcome disadvantages in prior containers of the indicated character and to provide an improved le box incorporating improved means for preventing the entrance of dust, dirt and other foreign material into the file box.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved le box incorporating improved means for preventing inadvertent opening of the lile box when the le box is in an inverted position. l

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved le box incorporating improved support` means which facilitates the insertion and withdrawal of photographic transparencies and the like with a minimum of time and eiort. Y

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved le box that is pleasing in appearance, durable and economical to manufacture and assemble.

The above as well as other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description, the appended claims and the accompanying drawing wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the tile box embodying the present invention, and showing the same in the closed position;

Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the tile box illustrated in Fig. I, taken on the line 2--2 thereof;

Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the tile box illustrated in Fig. 1, taken on the line 3-3 thereof;

Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the file box illustrated in Fig. l, and showing the same in a partially opened position;

Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevational view of the tile box illustrated in Fig. l, and showing the same in an inverted position; and

Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of the tile box illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the same in still another position.

Referring to the drawing, the present invention is shown incorporated in a file box, generally designated 10,

particularly adapted for use in storing photographic slides or transparencies, although it will be understood that the present invention is applicable to other uses. The le box 10 may be made in a wide variety of sizes and lengths so as to accommodate any desired size and number of sides of any desired character.

'The file box 10 is comprised of a body member, generally designated 12, and a closure member, generally designated 14, each of which may be made of plastic, wood, metal or other suitable material.

The body member 12 is open at the top and includes Vspaced substantially

16 and 18, respectively, the grooves 32 in the side wall 16 being aligned with the grooves 34 in the side wall 18 and the longitudinal axes of the ribs and grooves being substantially co-planar and lying in a plane substantially perpendicular to the planes of the

shaped ways

36 and 38 which are adapted to receive the closure member 14. While in the preferred embodiment illustrated the

36 and 38 are shown as being of generally dovetail shape, it will be understood that other types of interlocking ways may be employed. The

36 and 38 extend longitudinally of the body member 12 from the end wall 20 thereof to a position near, but spaced from the end Wall 22 thereof, the

36 and 38 diverging slightly as they approach the end wall 22 so that the closure member is held securely in the closed position when mounted on the ways 36 and 3S.

As shown in Figs. l and 4, the end portion 40 of each of the

16 and 18 slopes upwardly and terminates at a position above the upper edge of the remaining portions of the

side walls

16 and 18 being adapted to overlap complementary portions of the side Walls of the closure member 14. The upper portion of the end Wall 22 denes a recess 42 which extends transversely of the body member 12 and the ends of which are closed by the

side walls

16 and 18 while the upper portion of the end wall 20 defines a recess 44 which extends transversely of the body member 12, the ends of the recess 44 being open.

As shown in Figs. l and 3, the end Wall 22 also deiines generally dovetail-

shaped ways

46 and 48 which are adapted to receive the closure member 14, as will be described hereafter in greater detail. While in the preferred embodiment illustrated the

46 and 48 are shown as being of generally dovetail shape, it will be understood that other types of ways may be employed. The

46 and 48 extend upwardly of the body member 12, as viewed in Fig. l, from the bottom wall 24 to a position near, but spaced from, the upper edge of the end wall 22, the

The closure member 14 includes spaced substantially

The end wall 54 is provided with a recess 60 which isadapted to receive the upper portion of the end wall 22 of the body member 12 while the end wall 56 of the closure member 14 is provided with a recess 62 which is adapted to receive the upper portionof the-end wall 20 of the body member 12. With such a construction, the lower edge portions of the side and end walls of the closure member 14 overlap the upper edge` portions of the side and end walls of the body member 12 when the le box is in a closed position so as to form a seal to prevent the entrance of dust, and other foreign matter into the tile box.

The closure member 14V may be removed ,from the body member 12 when the tile boxis in vanupright posi-` tion, as shown in Fig. l,Y by sliding the closure member along'the ways 36 andV 38 toward the end wall20. As shown in Fig. 6, the closure member 14 may beslidably mounted on the

46 and 48 so as to prop the body member 12 in an inclined position to facilitate insertionv and removal of photographic slides or transparencies from the body member'12.
