Application September 18, 1956, Serial No. 610,491 2 Claims. (Cl. -39) forms with a seat a bed to an upright position in which it forms the back of a sofa.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a convertible bed and sofa combination which may be constructed economically with a minimum of parts and using a minimum of labor, one which is sturdy in construction and simple in structure, one which lends itself to mass production by relatively unskilled persons, and one which is highly effective in action.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be fully apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the article of furniture of the present invention with the back in upright position, such view taken so as to show the bottom and rear of the seat and back, respectively;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the article of furniture of Figure 1, but with the back in horizontal position;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2; V
Figure 5 is a perspective view of another embodiment of the article of furniture of the present invention with the back in upright position, such view being taken so as to show the bottom and rear of the seat and back, respectively;
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5, the dotted lines indicating the seat in horizontal position;
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a further embodiment of the article of furniture'of the present invention, with the back in upright position, such view being taken so as to show the bottom and rear of the seat and back, respectively;
Figure 8 is asectional viewrtaken on the line 8-8 of i e 7;. v
Figure 9 is a sectional view of the assembly of Figure 8 but with the'back in the horizontal position.
Referring in greater detail to the drawings in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, the combination sofa and bed of the present invention, comprises an understructure indicated generally by the reference numeral 10 and including two horizontally disposed side frame elements 11 and 12 which are arranged in lateral spaced relation one adjacent each end of a base 13 which forms a part of the understructure 10 and an upholstered cushion 14 which is carried on the base 13.
A fluid frame element 15 is positioned intermediate the ends of the base 13 in parallel spaced relation with respect tothe side frame elements 11 and 12.
The base 13 is positioned so that it is supported upon the forward end portions of the frame elements 11, 12, and 15, the remaining portions of the elements 11, 12, and 15 projecting rearwardly and forming a support for a second section designated generally by the reference numeral 16. u
The second section 16 includes a base 17 and a cushion 18 and it is positioned behind and adjacent to the base 13 and cushion 14 which make up the first section. The second section 16 is freely movable into and out'of the position in which the cushion 18 abuts against the cushion 14 and with the cushion 14 forming .a continuously hori zontal surface which may be employed as a bed, as shown in Figure 3. When the section 16 is in the corn tinuously horizontal position abutting against the cushion 14, the base 17 rests upon the remaining portion of the elements 11, 12, and 15. 7
Means is provided for securing the second section 16 against tilting movement relative to the cushion 14 when it is in the horizontal position. Specifically, this means embodies a pair of bars 19 and 21 arranged in lateral spaced relation inwardly of the ends of the base 17 and fixedly secured to the base 17. The bars 19 and 21 have projecting end portions 22 and 23, respectively, which extend under and releasably engage the adjacent portions of the base 13 when the base 17 is in the horizontal position and in alignment with the base 13.
Upright supporting means is provided on the side frame elements 11 and 12 and the intermediateframe element 15 for supporting the second section 16 after it has been moved out of abutting engagement with the first section, base 13 and the cushion 14, and specifically this upright supporting means embodies a notch in the upper face of each of the side frame elements 11 and 12 and the intermediate frame element 15, as indicated by the reference numerals 24, 25, and 26, respectively.
A small block 27 fixedly secured to the underside of the base 17 embodies a holding element for securing the second section 16 in its abutting position against the first section which comprises the base 13 and the cushion 14. The block 27 is so positioned that it engages the wall of the notch 26 in the frame element 15.
Arm assemblies 28 and 29 rise from the ends of the base 13 and carry pins 31 and 32, respectively, which are engaged by the second section 16 when the latter is in its upright position in which it forms the back of the sofa.
The tie bar 33 extends along the rear ends of the elements 11, 12, and 15, and connects the latter together. Conically shaped legs 34 and 35 are dependingly carried by the base 13 and blocks 36 and 37 on the elements 11 and 12,'constitute legs for supporting the combination sofa and bed of the present invention upon a supporting surface.
Referring to Figures 5 and 6, another form of the article of furniture of the present invention is shown in which the first section is designated generally by the reference numeral 38 and the second section is designated by the reference numeral39. The understructure of the first section 38 includes a pair of side frame elements 41 and 42 arranged at the ends of the base 43 and each provided with a notch 44 which forms the upright supporting means for the second section 39 when it has been moved to a generally upright position, as shown in Figure 6. Pins 45 are provided in the arm assemblies 46 and 47 for engaging the second section 39 when it is in the upright position for support of the same. A pair of bars 48 and 49 are fixedly carried by the base 51 of thesecond section 39 and has projecting portions which en- Patented. Ma: 22, 1960' gage the underface of the base 43 when the first and second sections are in the continuously horizontal posiconstitute a means by which the second form of the present invention is supported upon a supporting surface.
In Figures 7 to 9, inclusive, a third form of the convertible sofa bed and sofa combination of the present invention is shown in which the second section 54 is similarly supported in either an upright position with respect to the first section 55 or in acontinuously horizontal position and is freely movable between the two positions without any hinged member.
In this embodiment, the projecting portions of the bars 56 and 57 which are secured to the base 58 of the second section 54 engaged behind a rail 59 which extends under and is fixedly carried by the frame elements 61, 62, and 63. The elements 61 to 63, inclusive, are each provided ontheir upper faces with notches 64 for receiving the second section 54 when it is in the upright position. A block 65 is received in and engages the wall of the notch 64 in the element 62 when the second section 54 is in the continuously horizontal position abutting the rear edge of the first section 55. A rail 66 extends along the rear ends of the elements 61 to 63, inclusive, for holding the latter together and also to protect the walls of the building in which the combination sofa and bed of the present invention is used. This form of the invention also includes conically shaped legs, 67 and 68 dependingly carried by the base 69 of the first section 55 and other block type legs 71 and 72 dependingly carried on the under faces of the frame elements 61 and 63, respectively. The spacing of each of the bars 19, 21, 48, 49, 56 and 57 with respect to the adjacent frame element 11, 12, 41, 42, 61 or 63, respectively, is such that lateral shifting of the sofa sections is prevented in either the bed position or in the sofa position.
It will be seen, therefore, that the article of furniture, according to the present invention, in each of its three forms, is of sturdy construction, has no complicated hinge or lever arrangement for shifting the two sections relative to each other from the bed position to the sofa position, may be manufactured economically of a minimum of parts and by relatively unskilled labor, and lends itself to mass production at a reasonable cost.
