kGEORGE J. GOODHUE, JR., OF STEVENS POINT, WISCONSIN.
, INVALID-Ll FT.
l SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,801, dated February 5, 1884,
Application filed September 3, 1863, `(No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. GooDHUE, Jr., of Stevens Point, in the county of Portage, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid-Lifts; andI do hereby declare that Vthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in lifts for invalids, and will be fully described hereinafter.
Inthe drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved lift as mounted in a room. FigsaZ, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 show details of the same.
A is the lift-jib, preferably made of gaspipe, to the lower end of which is screwed the union a., formed to freely inclose theball or spherical head of screw b, on which said liftjib A can swing in any direction desired. In the top end of said jib A is screwed the hanger B, to carry on its outward body the spindie c of anged roller O, and on its point a pin, (l, to which is properly attached one end of belt D. This last, after being passed under anged pulley E of block F, is made to run over flanged roller C of hanger B, and thence to hube of crank-reel G, upon which its free end is fastened by screw f. The tail end c of said hanger B is iiattened, so that a piece of band-iron may be riveted to it, to extend back to the wall and be fastened thereto by screwhook b'. Said crank-reel G is supported on said lift-jib A, at the proper distance from the floor, by means of hanger I-I, which is a fiat metal piece formed with an eye, I, to fit over said jib and be fastened onto it by set-screw z'. In its free end, which is enlarged for the purpose, the reel is freely mounted on bolt j. The outside iiange, k, of said reel-hub e is` eX- tended out to form a crank, in end of which is fastened handle Z. The inside flange, m, of said reel-hub e has a ratchet, n, on its rim, with the teeth ofA which a pawl, o, properly attached o n said hanger H, can clutch to preventthe reel from running back.
J, Fig. 4, is astretcher or tray, made of any light desirable material, and provided with ropes or rods p p, and an eye, q, whereby said stretcher' can be hung on hook r of pulleyblock F.
K, Fig. 3, is a band or belt to pass around the body of the patient and raise him. This bandhas hook or buckle s and eye t, to attach same to hook r.
L, Fig. 2, shows another form of suspender, being a band with eye t,and two cushioned hoops, Z Z, for the arms, whereby the patient may be raised to a sitting or standing 'position, or transferred from one bed to' another or to a chair. v
Having thus described my invention, whatY I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is#
1. A lift for invalids, mounted withuniversal joint on its fioor attachment, and having its head connected to wall of room by a long hinge, whereby the4 elevating mechanism can be operated so as to safely and quickly move a patient from one bed to another or to a chair, or vice versa, as set forth. i
' 2. In a lift for invalids, the combination, with jib A, having union a, with recess for head of `screw b, and head-hanger B, with tail end a, of the band-iron hinge A and hook b, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a lift for invalids, the combination, with the crank-reel G, belt D and attachments, iianged roller O, and iianged pulley E of block F, of the stretcher J, band or belt K, and sus-u pender L and attachments, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
'In testimony 'that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Viscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
v GEORGE J. GOODHUE, JR.
Witnesses:
STANLEY S.' STOUT, M. KAUMHEIMER.
